COMPLETED - Gortandonell - Sinclair & McFarlane
« on: Wednesday 16 April 08 18:03 BST (UK) »

I have a slight quandary and wonder if anyone can help throw any light on the subject for me.

I have Grace  Mcfarlane my great (x3) grandmother she marries Hugh Stewart but dies in 1872 - her death certificate names her parents as Hugh Mcfarlane and Marion Mcfarlane (maiden surname Sinclair) and that and various census returns put her birth around 1814 in Tiree.

Searching the Old parish registers confirms that Hugh McFarlane of Gortandonell  married Marion Sinclair in 1812. - there is no record of any other marriage involving Hugh Mcfarlane.

The same OPR's record a birth of a daughter Catherine McFarlane to Hugh Mcfarlane and his wife Marion in 1813
In 1814 the same records show the birth of a daughter Grace McFarlane to Hugh Mcfarlane and his wife Sarah
also a son Dugald in born to Hugh Mcfarlane and Sarah.

Can anyone link to these families or give any information which may help break down this particular brick wall.

Thank you for those pieces of information they confirm what I have and the OPR's from Scotlands People.

The problem occurs with Marion & Sarah are they the same person and if so why the name change or if not how many hugh mcfarlanes were Cottars in Gortandonell.

Just thought I would let you know that Marion and Sarah are the same name, also sometimes known as Mirren and Morag is the gaelic equivalent of Sarah.   I used to work in the Area Repository in Lochilphead which held the books for Argyll.   Marion and Sarah were quite often interchanged.   Hope this solves your dilemma!

Hi,

Maybe you can help me.  I am looking for Flora McFarlane who was married to Donald McKenzie (from Argyllshire).   I assume they would have been married around 1780's as their children, John (b. c1790) and Mary (b.c1798) who were both born on Mull were born around this time. Is there an equivalent name for Flora?

Thanks so much,
myra

Re: your query on the name Flora - as far as I know there is no other equivalent unless someone else knows different!

According to http://www.whatsinaname.net/

Fionnaghal  is a derivative and that in itself leads to Fiona
