Hello,
Would somebody be able to help me with my ancestors in Aberdeenshire.
I'm stuck on one of my ancestor, James Udny married to Jean Shand on June 8th, 1727 in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.
They had 9 children.
I know his wife, Jean Shand, was born in 1704 in Ellon to John Shand.
I'm using www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk & www.familysearch.org, for my research. On familysearch, I haven't find any James Udny that could fit mine, I even tried various spellings of the surname!
On scotlandspeople, either I haven't find anything!
And on the back of not being able to find informations on his birth, on scotlandspeople they don't have the image of his mariage certificate, it is only searchable on Index entry.
It is either not online or doesn't exist anymore!
Can somebody help me, please!!!

It's frustrating, isn't it, when you get back so far and then the records just seem to end...I've got similar issues with some of my scottish families. Often it's because the parish records you have to rely on don't exist any more. You can see a list of extant parish registers on the General Register Office for Scotland website:
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/hlpsrch/opr-cov.html
Unfortunately you can't be sure where your James UDNY came from, but if you look at the Ellon entry on the list downloadable from the above site, you can see that the registers of births are complete for 1640-1854, so unless his name is hiding in a misspelling somewhere, you can be fairly certain that he wasn't born/baptised in Ellon, OR that he was not baptised, OR that he was baptised in a non-conformist church (not sure when they became common, though).

I've just found an unnamed Udny, bpt. 17 October 1703 in Ellon. Father Robert Udny . Also a J Udny, 15th April 1688, Ellon. Father Robert Udny- maybe possibles.

On Sp
I searched for udn*, no first name, 1650-1710, Aberdeenshire, both sexes.
What were their children's names in birth order?
Robert seemed to be the only Udn** in Ellon having children at that time.

their children's names in birth order are :
Jean, Margaret, Robert, John, Isabel, Alexander (my ancestor), James, Anna, and James.
The first James died young so, they named an other child James, 7 years after the first James's birth.
Why do you need theur children's names ?

Looks like Robert's his father
I see Jean's father was John, so Robert's wife might well have been Margaret - worth looking for a marriage!

Paternal grandfather
Maternal grandfather
Father
Daughters -
Maternal grandmother
Paternal grandmother
Mother
If mother was Jean and her mother was Jean then they might have named the third daughter after another close relative.

Found an early marriage - 29 July 1640 in Ellon for a Richard Wdnie and Issobell Pirie.
Possible grandparents of James

And thank you very much, for helping me searching my ancestors!
I knew about the scottish naming convention in those days, but not exactly!
Jean's mother is either Margaret or Agnes! Not sure yet.
I since there isn't any Agnes in the names of the children, I would say that Margaret is her mother.
But then that would make Isabel has James's mother and Robert's wife!
But I've seen that in all the family they didn't use the exact naming convention, they did change a few things in the order, except of the order it does make sens, don't you think so ?!

By the way, sorry, for the tones of mistakes I do in English  , I'm french, I only got the english language from my dad's side, but I grew up in France, so that makes my mother tongue as french!

I've never believed in the convention in a strict sense. My Dumfries & Galloway ancestors used the names in a very strange order but some people swear by it.
The Richard and issobel look interesting as well!

I've just looked my ancestor could only be the UDNY born in 1703 in Ellon, because the J. UDNY born in 1688, is a female!
So I think I've got my ancestor!!!

I need to have the birth certificate of the UDNY born in 1703, then try to find a marriage of a Robert Udny that could fit mine!

You can't get a birth cert, Nick. Only the baptism entry which you can download on the site.
Sorry about the female J - I was so pleased to find them that I just copied any possibles!
Remember to check for Wdn* as well.
