Hi Nick,
There was a rootschatter, Colbond, who hasn't been on for a couple of years but he knew a lot about the Udny surname. I've sent a PM with a link to this topic, hopefully you might get a reply.
As for your Shands, here is a link that might be of interest; http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,176414.0.html
Good luck

Hi Nick
Just to let you know that I've found the only marriage in Scotland for a R Udny (with variations) 1660-1704:
26 March 17692, Abercorn, West Lothian - Robert Udny and Margaret Cunningham
I'm not saying that this is is the one but it's worth investigating.
Regards

Hi Grothnwell,
Thanks, but I think I know about the Colbond, his name is Colin Bond, I'm in contact with him. And thanks for the forum on the Shands, I've checked and none of them are from my line as I can see.
Hi Gadget,
The Robert Udny mariage is in 1792, or maybe you wanted to say 1692, but if not it is too late, and there are a lot of variations of the surname Udny, I approximately know them all but maybe there are some that I don't know, it is possible.
Regards.
Nick.

Hi Nick
It was 1692. I'm not used to dealing with the seventeenth century I did give my search criteria though - 1660-1704.
I did a global search on Udny (variations) bpt Scotland in 1650 to 1673 and they've all come up as Aberdeen (city), Dunfermline and Edinburgh. I haven't tried Wdn* yet - the couple I found marrying in Ellon in 1640 were Wdnie.
It does, of course, depend on which parish records go back that far. You're very lucky to get at least some. There are some parishes which only have records that start at 1790 and it's searches at Edinburgh, etc. in such cases.
There are also some wills that might be worth looking at - none fro a Robert though.

Hi Gadget,
Since I couldn't find the mariage of Robert Udny and tried to find his children and that's what I've found :
George Vdme (b. 1683)
Vdnie (b. 1684) Anna Vdnie (b. 1685) William Vdnie (b. 1686) John Wdnie (b. 1686)
Udnie (b. 1692) Robert Udny (b. 1701)
(James) Udny (1703) Mary Udny (b. 1706)
They were all born in Ellon, Aberdeesnhire to a Robert! Some of them might not be his children, but for sure the last three Robert, James, and Mary are brothers and sisters. And the female J. Udny born to a Robert in 1888to a Robert could be one of his daughters too.
So as far as it seems, the father of Robert can't be Richardn since in the list of possible children of Robert I gave you, there isn't any Richard!
And I don't think my ancestors came from Edinburgh or Fife, because that would be the rich Udnys of the family, my Udnys are not the one from the Udny Castle and at the time it seems pretty difficult to imagine somebody going from the North-East of Scotland down to the South, don't you think so ?
Nick.

I'm trying to remember my Scottish history of those times, Nick. (Mostly from O levels done in 1961!) There was a separate parliament but a 'shared' monarch with Eng & Wales. There were civil wars in England & Wales and religious/political struggles in Scotland - Covenanters, etc. Records are unlikely to be complete or perfect. As far as the lack of a Richard is concerned - it might have been one of the unnamed ones. We don't really know
I think it would be well worth you reading some of the background of what Scotland was like then. That is what I did with my ancestors when I was trying to find out more and came to a brick wall/end of any written records.

Hi Gadget,
Thanks for the map but I already had it.
You're right, I think I might just go ahead and read the history of Scotland during that time, this way I'll understand a bit better. But I've already studied it a little bit! If you google "Clan Udny", you'll find a wikipedia page on the Udny Family! I know the Udnys were Jacobites and supported the Stewarts! And it is normally a Roman Catholic family, but after some branches might have become Presbyterian! My family History is quite strange! My Ancestor Alexander Udny (b.1736), to James Udny & Jean Shand, was born in Ellon, Aberdeenshire. Then suddenly, you can see him in records marrying in Fife to Agnes Clark in 1770! I have a lot of questions concerning his emigration to the South of Scotland, like : Why did he leave his family ancestral region ?! Why in Fife and not an other region ?
It might have a connection with the Second Jacobite Rebellion in 1745, and the final chance to the House of Stuart to reign on the United Kingdom! Or maybe he wanted to visit new places and was more like going to aventure, but, that's more unlikely for the poors and in the mid 1700's, don't you think so ?
Nick.
