Look up please William Henry Howell
« on: Wednesday 16 April 08 23:55 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help please?
I'm looking for a record for William Henry Howell born about 1801.
In 1841 he is in Liverpool but in the 1851 England census his place of birth is given as GARMOUTH. His occupation is given as hairdresser.
Thanks

Hi

Can you tell us where he was living in 1851 as I can't locate a census entry for him

Does the 1851 show Scotland Garmouth - the reason I ask is that there are a lot of entries on the 1851 census showing birthplace Garmouth - Norfolk when in fact it should be Yarmouth

Hi Carol

Yes I thought it might be Yarmouth ( you certainly found him as Nowel quicker than we did - it took us weeks!) but on ancestry gives Garmouth. In the 1861 census I think he is a pauper living in West Derby Liverpool and there place of birth is given as London! Even more confusing. London could make sense as his son moved to London poss because there were relatives there.
Thanks for your help

Hi

If you view the actual image - it says Yarmouth - Ancestry have transcribed it incorrectly as they have with lots of other Yarmouth birthplaces

I'll have a look at the 1861

1861 is odd isn't it - occupation is now a Barbers clerk  not a hairdresser??  If it was a totally different occupation I'd say you had the wrong 1861 entry

I wonder was he in the hospital in the Workhouse and perhaps suffering from Alzheimers which may account for the confusion

Thanks Carol - I'll keep working on it - I'll try Norfolk look ups and see if that produces any results.
What a lovely cat - if it's yours I bet it need some brushing to keep it looking like that.
