Hello, I am not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I am sure someone will tell me if not.
Can someone advise as to where I would start trying to trace my grandfather George Walter Saunders's brother (and possibly sisters) who I was told by an aunt "went or were sent" to Australia. Auntie could not tell me which brother, Robert 1860, Frederick 1862 or William Charles 1872.
I know my grandfather's mother was widowed in 1890 and from then the family split up even more than it had been previously, so the story of emmigration might well be true. They were basically from Deptford but also lived in Greenwich and Beckenham.
With a common name like Saunders it was never going to be easy but now I am completely stuck. If it helps these are the children in 1861 and 71 with William Charles b 1872, and my grandad George in 1877. SAUNDERS 1861 Elizabeth 3 Greenwich Robert 1 Deptford
1871 Elizabeth aged 13 Frederick aged 8 Emma aged 4 Ada A aged 2
Any help whatsoever would be gratefully received. Regards Vicwinann

First of all it would be a good idea to follow each of the children forward to see when/where they last turn up.
Robert James b1860?
If we start with Robert bc1859/1860 Greenwich, would he be the Robert James SAUNDERS birth registered June quarter 1860 Greenwich registration district ref. 1d 545? As he doesn't appear with the family on the 1871 census I wonder if his is the death registered Jun quarter 1864 Greenwich registration district ref. 1d 393? If so, that would discount him
Elizabeth would appear to be Elizabeth Jane birth registered Sep quarter 1857 Greenwich registration district ref. 1d 542. She appears as born Greenwich in the 1861 census and born Deptford in the 1871 census (the latter in Beckenham).
I can't see Elizabeth Jane with any certainty after the 1871 census as yet. If you have a confirmed "sighting" of her after 1871 could you please let us know.
Frederick W according to the 1871 census born Deptford so could he be Frederick William SAUNDERS birth registered September quarter 1862 Greenwich registration district ref. 1d 553?
I wonder if he is a boarder (occupation of painter like his father) living in Commercial Street, Hartlepool, Durham at the time of the 1881 census - age 19 born Deptford RG11/4908 folio 20 page 36? Not too sure
You have been following my research footsteps almost exactly. No, I haven't traced Elizabeth after 1871. I thought that she may have married by 1881, but to whom and where?. I can't definitely say that the birth or death reg for the Robert James are the right ones. I will have to bite the bullet and order the certs blind. Frederick may be the one in Hartlepool. It certainly looks like it. As for Emma and Ada - no sightings after 1871. Ditto, after his baptism, of William Charles 1872.
I was also told by my aunt that my grandfather, George, was "adopted" by a family called Spring when about 13, but as this was between the 1891 census and his marriage in 1898, census returns would not be of use. He was the youngest. His brother John 1874 also disappears after 1891, when the two of them were with their mother Jane in Deptford, according to a 1901 transcript sent to me. S0.... where do I go from there? Thanks for your efforts, anyway. Regards Vicwinann
