Great Budworth Parish Register (DONE family)
« on: Thursday 17 April 08 09:01 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I have traced back to a relative, but am unable to find details of his birth / father.

Lewis Done:
Born, circa 1811/14, Manchester
Married 1834 Manchester Cathedral (Parish Records)
1841 Census, living in Great Budworth (near Northwich)
1851 Census, living in Runcorn

Therefore I'm hoping to find some records of him & other family members in Great Budworth (1834-1851), to uncover further clues.

Could anybody offer advice regarding Great Budworth Parish Registers?

What survives, how complete are they, how do I access them to research?

All my research thus far has been web driven, so any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You say he was born in Manchester.  Any parish entries in Cheshire for his children's christenings would not contain any details of his own parentage.

You would be better asking for a Manchester Cathedral lookup for his marriage as that is a more likely place of possibly finding more info about him.

Fathers names were not shown on marriage entries prior to 1837 but there may be a "Done" witness

GENUKI is usually a good guide for this sort of question. I usually do a search in the format GENUKI + "place name". The registers for Great Budworth survive and are at Cheshire Records Office at Chester (sorry as your profile doesn't have a location I don't know whether this is convenient for you). You can usually access films of parish records at a local LDS family history centre for a small fee (details of centres are on the FamilySearch website). There are certainly some Great Budworth records on the IGI on the FamilySearch site. They may be some on the new (under testing) FamilySearch Labs site.

Sorry, I didn't fully explain:
Unfortunately I've already tried that & drawn a blank (no parents on the register, the witnesses are not family members), hence I'm now trying to find any other relatives (hopefully a sibling).

I'm guessing that he moved from Manchester (his place of birth & marriage), to this tiny village because he had relative there.

I know it's a long shot, but it's the only avenue left to explore.

I'll try GENUKI & look into the opening hours at Chester (I live in Yorkshire, but it's a nice day out!)

Thanks for your help

Hi fac191,

I also have DONE family from Great Budworth - well one at least, Hannah DONE my 4xggrandmother who married John MOORE at G Bud in 1776.  She may be the Hannah on the IGI baptised in 1757 at G Bud with father William.  But it does suggest it's possible that Lewis still had family in the area.

The IGI only seems to hold female baptisms unfortunately although there is better coverage on the BVRI if anyone has access to the discs (I don't I'm afraid).  Great Budworth was one of the biggest parishes in Cheshire and the registers are hard work, especially in the mid 1700's as there was a fire and they were smoke and water damaged so it's worth cross referencing with the BT's.  Last time I was at the records office they mentioned that they were looking at refilming them with the latest technology which would be a great help.

Nothing on the new family search site yet for Great Budworth as far as I can see.....

I think the more likely reason for the move was that his wife was born in Cheshire

As I said before -  there are not going to be any entries in Cheshire parish records for either his own childrens baptisms or of any possible relatives childrens baptisms that tell you who his parents were which is the object here.

He was born and married in Lancashire and any birth/baptism will be in Lancashire records

Hi, As previously mentioned the BVRI (british vital records index).  I have just checked this for the period 1811 +/- 5 years for the whole of England for a Lewis Done and there is no match.  Sorry this won't help, but will rule out another possible source.

fac191 - if you do go to Chester for this or any other search & are going by car, I'd recommend the Park & Ride - http://www.chester.gov.uk/council_services/parking_services/park_and_ride.aspx
A lot cheaper than the city centre car parks & a good bus link. I've used the one that goes from the Zoo - from the stop in the city centre it's a 5-10 minute walk along the walls to the CRO.

Thanks mshrmh, but to be honest it appears that I'm flogging a dead horse here, so I may have to give it up.

Having drawn a blank at his place of birth, my idea was that because it was only a small village he may have appeared as a witness on a family member's nuptuals whilst he was there & that may have opened another line of investigation.

But it's potentially an awful lot of work for very little benefit.

I have a Sarah DONE who married Peter MOORES in Great Budworth on Jun 29 1711.

I am wondering if perhaps either Hannah or John were related to either of them?  We may be extremely distant cousins Smiley
