Hi Paul,

I live in this area and Seal, Ightham and Wrotham are villages I know well.   I've studied your picture for ages hoping to spot some clue but I'm sorry I can't see anything apart from the 'telegraph poles' to even begin to help pinpoint where it might have been taken.   I don't suppose you've got any possible road names or anything from census information which might help?

The background doesn't look natural. Huh

Is it a painted background or a railway embankment?

I don't know but more or less the whole of Kent has areas like that Grin

If you would like some help with dating this photograph Paul we can move it to the photo restoration board here on Rootschat where persons with lots of knowledge in dating photos are more likely to see it.

My first thought was 'railway'.   I'm just musing here, but a couple of things led me to this supposition - the hut just out of shot and the clearly dark ground around their feet ... a railway hut?  possibly coal on the ground?   True they'd more likely be hauling it than wasting it as foundations for railway tracks, were there (coal) merchants in the family?   They could of course be in their 'Sunday best' for the photo, but I've got several formal pictures of some of my family and none of them are dressed as well as these people - were Paul's family, I'm wondering, quite 'well-to-do' or local businessmen?

As for the 'where' - as Casalguidi has said, to visit every location in Kent (even in the area Paul's searching) that looks like the background would be a life's work in itself.

If you can come up with anything else Paul, I'm happy to take my camera and scout around the area - it's so close, I won't even have to get the car out!!
