On the 1861 census William seems to be 54 Sarah 47 and 2 young children 6 and 4
and a son William aged 23.

Hi Kat

I have just been to the library for 4 hours and looked at your marriages in
Crick but did not take a copy as the machine was playing up.

In 1837 you would get the father's name.

Prior to that it could have had him noted as being a witnesses or other family members.

It was strange that they were no baptisms at all for William and Mary's children 
(maybe they had so many children they could not afford to pay for them).

Therefore where did Joseph's Pub come from?

Only on William and Sarah's marriage in 1852 were family members noted.

Joseph and Elizabeth were witnesses (Elizabeth signed her mark).

Thank you for spending so much time in the library.... you really didnt have to...

To be perfectly honest i dont have a clue where the pub came from.. Im not even sure what the pub was called. Could it be possibly that he might have just called himself a publican and just be a barman in a pub??

But Joseph did change his trade almost every decade... And he was very very young for being a publican so im led to believe...

Knowing Crick a little there are a few pubs yet you may have something there.

If the family were labourers it just seems strange, something to look at further
maybe.

Yes it is rather strange lol!

Thankyou for that website! All i need now is something that can help me read copper plate writing from the census'.... Unfortunately i have some trouble trying to picture what the person was writing, particularly with addresses, having never been taught how to write like that!

My dad has been doing some searching and it appears hes found some baptism records rom rootschat search....

Rootschatters will always help with reading old hand writing.

If stuck just post an sample of the image and see what they say if you want.

I did find out that the 2 non-conformists churches in Crick didn't start until 1820 but
Buckby is not that far away.

Glad to see your father helping out.  Smiley

They certainly seems so though they are the family members.

Prior to 1837 they would have to have married in C of E hence the marriages in
the Parish Church.
