Castle Garden vs Ancestry
« on: Thursday 17 April 08 12:59 BST (UK) »

I found what I believe are my ggg grandparents with their oldest daughter on passenger records on Castle Gardens. According to this site, they came on the Adriatic, arriving in NY on 16 August 1852. There names were Bernard Martin, 35, joiner, Margaret Martin, 28, servant, and Mary Martin, 1. According to Castle Garden, there were 4 other Martins on the ship: Bridget, 40, servant; John, 10; Norry, 45, servant (F); and Robert, 9, shopkeeper(?). I can't see the actual passenger list here to see if they were all traveling together. The timing is right. My gg grandmother was born in Dec 1852 in NY, and the story is her mother was pregnant with her when she came over. My Bernard was a joiner on the 1851 census in Lancs and a carpenter in census in the us.

i went to Ancestry to see if i could see an actual image. Ancestry does not list these same people on the Adriatic on that same day. The only Martins I can find are John, 10; Mary, 32; and Pat, 12.  Shocked Shocked The image is horrible, almost unreadable.

Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Susan,

Thank you. Nasty document to try to read. Would you say, in your opinion, that Bridget and Robert are with Bernard/Barnard, Margaret and Mary?

Whoopee!!  Grin More researching to do. I am very excited. Thank you soooo much Susan. Now to find Bridget and Robert in US. I have Bernard and Margert, with Mary, with a few loose ends to tie up. My guess is Bridget is Bernard's sister-in-law, either widowed or going to meet husband in US, but of course it can be just about anything.
