The Hem- information please
« on: Friday 18 April 08 04:07 BST (UK) »

I am looking for a Jones family that lived in this area in 1780-1810.  Can you give me any information regarding this place or the family that I am researching.  Does this place still exist?

The Hem still exists. It's now sometimes called Hem Lane. There are a few nice old properties out there (as far as I can remember - it's been a few years since I went down there).
Do you have a house name or any idea what kind of property they would have lived in?

Thanks for responding.  I assume that they must have been either living on a farm or labourers on a farm.  This was around 1789-1810.  Do you know if they had large estates in that area?

The Hem is between Shifnal and Telford, just off the A4169. Nearest to it, as far as I can make out, would have been Holmer Farm. I'm not sure whether this was a big estate though. There was also Stirchley Grange and Stirchley Hall. None of these exist as farms any more but the names still appear on maps as roads and buildings.

I don't know whether this will be of any help to you.

Further afield were Weston Park (a huge estate even now) and Apley Hall on the way to Bridgnorth. I am sure that there must have been places within Shifnal as well. The building that is now the Park House hotel has been there since the 17th century. It's hard to know how far people would have walked to work or, in fact, whether The Hem was a bigger place than it appears now.

Hope this is of some use.
