Hi All,
I'm hoping someone can help me in tracing Trial Records for a Samuel Wallis who was tried at New Sarum on the 6th of March 1847. From the Index to Convict Exiles here in New South Wales I have found that Samuel was sentenced to 10 years but there is no record of his crime. He was exiled to Australia on the "Adelaide" which left London on the 24th of December 1849.
For some reason the records relating to Exiled Convicts are not available to the public so I am hoping to get Samuel's records from the source. I have just started tracing the Wallis line for a friend and I believe this Samuel to be his GG Grandfather, however at this stage I have very little to go on. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Tissy from Oz

Hi Tissy,
County Assizes records are only available from the National Archives, however, some information is available at county level............
Samuel Wallis, age 30 was committed for trial at the Salisbury Assizes 1847 on 9 Nov 1846. He along with his accomplices, William Watts alias Savage, 37, Edward Weston, 21, John Hawkins, 25, Thomas Tibbles, 22 and Stephen Buckland, 21, were then held at Marlborough Bridewell awaiting trial on 6 Mar 1847. The ring leader, William Watts, and the rest were charged with entering Burderop Park, the estate of John James Calley, on the night of 6 Nov 1846 and cutting and beating him and shooting and wounding his gardener, John Newton. They were also charged with entering the Park with the intention of taking or destroying game.
They were all sentenced to 10 years transportation.
The trial was reported in full in the Salisbury and Winchester Journal of 13 Mar 1847, a copy of the relevant page may possibly be purchased from the Wiltshire and Swindon Archives (google for the website) or by
e-mail archives[at]wiltshire.gov.uk replace [at] with @
Subsequent to the trial they were all held awaiting orders at Fisherton Anger County Gaol convicted of cutting and wounding with intent to injure or kill. From there at some date not specified they were taken from that gaol and transported.
Hope that is of some help, Dave

Hi Dave,
Your blood is worth bottling, thank you so much for all that info, I will see if I can get a copy of the newpaper article. I did make one error in my post, that being the date of Samuels transportation. The Adelaide actually left London on the 17th of August 1849 and arrived in NSW on 24/12/1849. Samuel was granted a Ticket of Leave upon arrival, he went on to become a farmer, married in 1858 and fathered 15 children. I guess he turned out alright in the end. Now all I have to do is try and trace his birth, I'm waiting on certificates which will hopefully give me a little more to go on.
Thanks once again Dave, your efforts are very much appreciated.
Rehards, Tissy

Do you know in what parish he was born? I think Burderop is close to Wroughton, but that means little as I guess he was quite mobile.

Hi Dave,
My apologies for not replying sooner, I have been away for a few days, talk about computer & genealogy withdrawal symptoms.
I'm sorry, but at this stage I do not know what parish Samuel was born in. I have written off for a copy of his Ticket of Leave which I hope will give me a bit more info. I am also waiting on his Marriage certificate, I am only hoping that he gave his birth place on one of those. As far as I know at this stage he was born c1816 in England but that is only info taken off someone elses research so until I get the certificate I won't have anything really concrete to go on.
I have only just started to research this line of the Wallis family, it will probably take another couple of weeks before the certificates arrive, they are terribly slow here. When they do, I will do another post if necessary.
Thank you once again Dave for all your help, I'll let you know what happens, I think there is one heck of a story with this man.
Regards, Tissy

I shall be away for a few weeks so I'll not be able to look at parish records until the latter half of June. If you find out more about him I'll be only too pleased to help.
Cheers Dave

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your message, it will probably take that long for the certificates to arrive. I hope they give me a bit more to go on.
Hope the few weeks away are enjoyable.
