Hi
I'm hoping that someone in the group has access to Censuses for Scotland.
I'm trying to find the occupation in the 1871 Scottish Census of the Head of family of this group: Alexander BROWN, born ca1827, Peterhead, Aberdeen, Scotland Jane L BROWN, wife 1840, Lonmay, Aberdeen Scotland, and their children William B BROWN, ca 1868, Peterhead Margaret Ann BROWN, 2 Feb 1871, Peterhead
I have the 1881 details showing that he was, by then, a Merchant. He might have been a seaman and away from home but his wife and children should be in the Census.
Regards,
Robin

Hi Robin
He is also a merchant on the 1871, living at Princes Street, Peterhead.

Hi Gadget
Thanks so much. That is exactly what I wanted to know. Bang goes another family legend that had him as the Captain of a whaling ship. By 1881 he was probably too old for that but in 1871 he was not.
Thanks for your quick and helpful response.
Regards,
Robin

Hi Robin
Have you got their marriage cert - it would give his occupation on that as well.

I've had a quick look for you - do you know Jane's surname?

I see that son William was William Brodie Brown b. Peterhead 11 may 1867. On this cert, it says that Alexander married Jane Leslie on 30th November 1862, Kirkwall. Alexander was a Draper at the time of this birth.

Hi Gadget
You are amazing! How did you do that and so quickly too? Sorry, I don't know Jane's maiden name.
Thanks so much. You've made my day.

He was a draper when they married as well. Maybe he went whaling very early in his life - do you have him on the early censuses. His parents were Alexander Brown, a ships master (deceased) and Margaret, maiden surname Brodie. Jane's father was Thomas Leslie, a landed proprietor and Ann, maiden surname Aberdein.

Hi Gadget
Thanks very much for this. So the family stories may be right but they had the wrong generation. My tree overfloweth!
Thank you for giving of your expertise so readily.

Robin

You're very welcome, Robin
I'm now interested in why they married in Kirkwall and also the previous generation.

Hi Gadget
The fact that they married in Lesliedale. Kirkwall, Orkney, and Jane's father was Thomas Leslie, made me look up Lesliedale on the Internet and it is now a Hereford cattle farm and looks very rustic. I imagine that it used to be the family farm.

Robin

Hi Robin
I checked wills for Thomas Leslie on the Scotlands People site - there are quite a few that might be worth investigating:
