Hmmm. Before that, the only matching William Pike I can see gives his birthplace as South Shields.
An Able Seaman, unm, on board the Royal Navy Vessel 'Persian' off Cape of good Hope in 1861
and 1851 HO107/2396 469 33 Bishopwearmouth, Durham 319 High Street Thomas Pike, head, 35, Glassmaker & Publican, b. Northumberland Scottswood Jane, wife, 38, b. No Shields William John, son, 15, Glasshouse Labourer, b. Durham So Shields Thomas, son, 10, scholar, b. Northumberland No Shields Ann Isabella, dau, 8, scholar, Bpwearmouth James Josias, son, 4, b. do. Lancelot joseph, son, 10 mo, b. do.
Can't swear it's the same person!

Hello, Thanks for the info. I know William married Sarah in 1859 Sunderland, but cant imagine him joining the navy just after he was married. Any luck with Sarah for 1861? I have them at the same address in 1881. Any chance of you looking up 1891 and 1901 for me? they don't appear to have had any children. Really appreciate your help. Susie J
