James Hugh PEADY mystery - Thames / Auckland
« on: Friday 18 April 08 11:19 BST (UK) »

Recent inquires with a an elderly Aunt (92 yrs) revealed that a g/g/aunt was the illegitimate son of a a man she named as James PEADY. That around 1907 he returned from NZ with a pregnant women (not his wife) and the child born was taken in my one of my family members and adopted the family name. She may have never known about this in later life.

My enq's reveal the following;
1877 a James PEADY, aged 34, went to NZ from Aust on board the ship Albion.
1893 Coromandel Electoral Roll had a James Hugh PEADY living in Broad St, Thames - Butcher. His wife Eva Eliza PEADY was living in Williamson St, Thames.
1894 a Mrs PEADY arrvied in Australia from NZ with children aged 6/10/8 (No names)
1903 James Hugh PEADY and wife were living in Ballarat, Australia (Electoral Roll).
1915 their son Thomas Archibald PEADY enlisted in the AIF giving his age as 22, that he was born in NZ and his father was James Hugh PEADY and Eva PEADY living in Ballarat Australia. He was subsequently KIA  in France

(1)Desperate to find any record of a marriage to Eva and birth of any children for James PEADY in NZ.

(2) Desperate to find any record of James coming and going to NZ, or presence in NZ in particular between 1903 and 1915.

Any information no matter how small would be most welcome. Thanking you in advance.

Hi again Sturdy

Have you seen the listing for James Hugh PEADY at "world connect"
    http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

Is this the same man   ??

[His birthyear is given as c. 1856.    Two daughters born VIC in 1890 and 1902 with "unknown wife" ??    The James PEADY arriving NZ 1877 aboard "Albion" seems to have been born c. 1843 ?? ].

The son Thomas,  born 1893 (if he gave correct age on enlistment ?) doesn't seem to be amongst the children travelling to AUST with Mrs PEADY in 1894 ?

Did James Hugh PEADY die in Australia ?

There is a burial record for a PEADY 1893 in Auckland

There are no other PEADY's on electoral roll for that year, so maybe it is same family

1893 electoral roll James is in BROWN ST (??where shop was or it could have been on corner of Williamson St where wife was)

Lucy 2 & Althea thank you for the generous amount of information you have supplired in such a short time. It is very much appreciated.

I can't but help think all the PEADY's you have mentioned are but one in the same family. It is a reasonably rare name in NZ and Australia back then (even now). The newspaper articles were great and sure enough the rest of the PEADY family in Aust were butchers. If you come across the name anywhere else keep me in mind.

Lucy2 the JH PEADY on the World Connect is one in the same. I will attempt to contact the subscriber. Although his age seems out on going to NZ at this point I feel it was my PEADY on the ship. I am only aware of one other James PEADY - his father James Devenport PEADY? Again than you all.

Hi Sturdy

There is a Catherine Peady (born c.1828) in the Thames Coromandel District Council (TCDC) Cemetery database, could also be part of your family.

http://web.tcdc.govt.nz/cemeprod/cemeteries.aspx

Thanks heaps Christine

Hi

TCDC had to give me something for me rates going up $350.00 odd dollars  Cry

Regarding the burial plot for Catherine Peady - plot has capacity for two and is used, also listed in this plot is a Mary Ann Bottomore, or is this another TCDC error!!!

Thanks heaps Christine

Have checked the death fiche that I have for the weekend

no Catherine Peady/Peddie/Peddy

there is however a

Christina Peddie  year 1896   Fiche #1869   Thames

so perphaps not a Peady family member after all.

Thanks heaps Christine
