Suicide ?????
« on: Friday 18 April 08 11:39 BST (UK) »

In 1968 the body of a man was found on the Railway lines in Nottinghamshire.

He had walked up to I think the next village.
The gossip says that his clothes were found folded at the side of the track and he was naked. There were also I believe rumours of murder.

There was a short piece in the newspaper about his death.
His family refuse to speak of it.

Is there any way I can find if he took his own life or was it an accident.

Purchase his death certificate - or look in the local newspapers for the inquest report.

Hi Topmarks  Smiley

THere is currently a free trial being conducted of digitised newspapers including the Times Digital Archive which goes up to 2005.
If you go to this page and sign up, you can search The Times to check if the story was reported in the national papers.

I have got his death cert. It says "Multiple Injuries" verdict "Open"
It also says on the cert Certificate received from Deputy  Coroner September 1968

Also have found a piece in the local paper just saying he had been hit by a train.

No obituary or anything have I found.

Hmmm...if the coroner gave an "Open" verdict then there was obviously nothing to suggest foul play or suicide, or at least nothing to prove it.  It may be too recent, but you could try getting hold of the Coroner's Report  Undecided

Ok thanks Pru. I am told the rumour has it his cloths were found folded at the side of the track. But if this was so I doubt an open verdict would be given??

Best to try for the report then.

Thanks again

HI,
I recently tried to get hold of a copy of a coroner's report for a death in Nottinghamshire, which happend in 1954.
They replied that the Archives Department records circa 1954 were sketchy and it was doubtful there would be any records still surviving. (1968 could be completely different, however - you might have more luck!)
They said if I did wish to proceed with the matter, I would have to write giving permission to progress with the search. A copy of the deceased person's Death Certificate (which you have) is needed. There is an administrative cost, independent of the result of the findings.
Address is:
H.M. Coroner for Nottinghamshire
Office and Main Court
50 Carrington Street
Nottingham
NG1 7FG
In the end I didn't proceed - I did find there was a brief mention in the Times Digital Archive + the Nottingam Local Studies Library photocopied and sent me a copy of the reports in the Nottingham Evening Post (2 days after his death).
email:local_studies.library@nottinghamcity.gov.uk
Tel: 0115 915 2873
Staff were very helpful + costs very reasonable.
Hope this helps,
Kind regards,
Paulene Smiley
P.S. The signature of the coroner, if nothing else, was worth sending the letter! Grin

Thank you for that information. Very helpful.

It is always hard to know what to do in these circumstances.
I suppose if I do find it to be the worse I could keep it to myself. No need to upset the older folks.

The newspaper info is very interesting.

I think I shall try with the coroner to see if my date is any different to yours
Best wishes to you

Hi

Where in Nottingham was it? Can you look in the local paper archives?
