LEE, DAVIS-KENT
« on: Thursday 17 September 09 13:27 UTC (UK) »

Hello there, I was just wondering if DAVIS and LEE were common gypsy names in the KENT area?
My John LEE, was transported aboard the BARWELL for stealing a bay mare with his partner in crime Charles COOPER.
I believe he was born in 1758 and christened on the 20th of November 1758, FRINDSBURY,KENT, TO Richard and Margaret.
His parents were also married in 1758, on the 29th May 1758 DRATFORD KENT.
I can however not find anymore children for Richard LEE and Margaret in KENT.
Can anyone offer any advice on how to trace this family?

Hi Rachel, Lee is a very popular name for Gypsies in kent, i know of several very large families in east kent that still live the old ways.
good luck with the search.

Just to add to that ~ now I've noticed it; Bob's book records Davis (and derivatives) as having been found all over, including Kent, from 1571 till now. Cooper, the same, from 1625.  Lee, also from 1625.

So, they're certainly some names with a bit of history behind them too!  Wink

Talking of history; So will my book be soon. It's falling to pieces with wear since I came here!  Grin
