Susannah and Edward James Fayrer in 1864.

I'm completely stuck. I can not find anything out about my 3 x Gt Grandfather Samuel Parnell other than he was a Shoe Maker in Totnes. This is from his daughter's marriage certificate. I know that his wife Susanna (Hoar) was born on 19 Sept 1773 in Totnes.
I have become acutely aware that pre census ancestors are MUCH harder to trace!! Are there any tips on how to go about finding the ones who are just too old to have been recorded on the 1841 census? This seems to be a sticking point on most branches now, apart from a few lucky finds such as Family Bibles and very good IGI records.
How much information would I need to have to make it worth going to the Records Office? I can see I would have to trawl for days with what I know at the moment!!!
Can anyone make any suggestions?
KateW.

I assume you have the christening details of their other children? Samuel 13/5/1804; Thomas 7/6/1811; and Jane 14/8/1808.
Samuel and Susanne his wife were married 23/3/1803.
I have check IGI and BIVRI and can find no other info.
You have proof that they married in Totnes, the children were born there the chances are that he was born there, so I think a visit is well worth while, I don't know if you have visited records offices before, but my experience is they are very helpful and can often point into a search area you had not thought of. Good luck in your search, I know how difficult it is, I live in Spain and have just 4 weeks eaxh year to try and fit in a day when 'Head Office' won't mind.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I have details for the other children and even though I have the date of Samuel and Susanna's marriage, I have no record of where I found that, did you find it on IGI records?
Looks like a visit to the records office would be worthwhile.

I just wanted to ask you : in a previous post, someone mentioned the christening of Samuel Parnell on 6th May 1781 in Stoke in Teignhead in the IGI, but you don't appear to mention that here. Does that mean you ruled him out?

Hi absillitoe,
How very observant of you! No, not ruled out completely but only pencilled in. Stoke in Teignhead is very near Paignton where there were many Parnells so I can not be sure it is the same chap. That is something I would hope to find out from the record office as I know his marriage details and hopefully could find his father from those.

Hello Indaloman,
Can you tell me what BIVRI is, please? (Sounds like a nasty disease in cattle!! ) Is it a source of records that I could use?
Thanks, Kate.
