which Mary Ann Bellinger is mine
« on: Friday 18 April 08 17:33 BST (UK) »

Is anyone researching the Bellinger/Ballinger family of Brize Norton?

The birth certificate of George Henry Broadist (born 7 Jan 1872) shows his parents to be George Broadist and Mary Ann Bellinger (or Ballinger, it is hard to read).

Later censuses show both George and Mary Ann as born in Brize Norton around 1847/8.

George and Mary Ann appear never to have married and there are 2 May Ann Bellingers in Brize Norton born at around the correct time according to the 1851 census:

Mary A aged 3 daughter of Henry and Jane  (HO107/1731/379/3)

Mary Ann aged 2 daughter of Charles and Jane  (HO107/1731/368/12)

Henry and Charles were both born Chedworth, Gloucs and appear to be brothers. (Henry born c1813, Charles c1811 both christened in Chedworth parents John and Ann)

Is there any way I can tell which is mine?  Does anyone know anything about either family?

have you tried to eliminate one of the lasses with a BMD event ?

Does one appear on a census after the other one 'disappears' if you follow me ?

Hi Carolyn,

Bit frustrating a thing to do but you could trace the other Mary Ann further and order HER marriage cert (if she marries, of course) to rule her out  Smiley

Just had a quick look on freebmd, can't see a marriage in the right area BUT there is a death of a Mary Ann Bellinger Witney 1874 Sep qtr aged 25 so looks like the other one didn't marry as I have mine in all censuses to 1901.

age 25 would be the one (hopefully) shown born 1849 on the 1851 census - -f you get that death cert, the informant might be a parent whom you recognise....

course, it could be a married name !   Roll Eyes

The first married a Henry Upstone and the 1891 census gives her dob as
c1858.

The second was the widow of John Bellinger, maiden name Drinkwater

The Brize Norton baptisms show Mary Ann Bellinger baptised 4 Dec 1858, daughter of Elizabeth Bellinger, single woman - so not mine

You might consider this marriage for your George and Mary Ann - the District involved,  and using 'Ann' matches the 1871 census where they were in Wednesbury ....

Marriages Sep 1870

BELLENGER  Anne    W. Bromwich  Vol 6b P837
BROADHOUSE  George

In that census, there is a Boarder, George Bellenger, 19 born Brize Norton too - will that help show which lass it was in 1861 hopefully with a brother George ?

The Chas and Jane family have a 9 year old Charles, but hes ony 2 / 3 years younger than Mary Ann - whereas on the 1871 he was 3 / 4 years younger - so the Henry/Jane family's John is a better fit.

But why George ?

Charles and Jane had a son George in 1860 but according to the Brize Norton baptisms :
"George Bellinger bap 26 Apr 1860 son Charles and Jane (private - died)."

Thanks for your help newfster (and Tati) I think I will try the Bellinger /Broadhouse marriage. It would be about the right time for their first child born October that year.  Broadhouse is not a variation I have found before but with this family who in past generations seem to change surnames with gay abandon who knows.

Can't find another George Bellinger anywhere in the records at the right time but will keep looking.

Again thanks for the help and suggestions
