Shh! Be very, very quiet... I'm hunting forebears!
|
Is anyone able to do a look up for me at St Peter's in Stockport please?
I'm looking for the baptism of Mark MEREDITH in abt 1798. I suspect that I've found his parents buried there (does anyone have the MIs?) and wondered if he was baptised there as he's a complete mystery man at the moment.
MANY thanks
~ Claire

Hi Claire,
St Peter’s Church was founded 1765 as a chapel to St. Mary’s and became a parish church in 1838. The baptism records held at Stockport library and also Cheshire Record Office are for 1878-1977.
Regards, Pat.

So aren't there any records there for the period Mark was born in?

No, sorry there are only the dates I've given you, Not sure but I think that earlier baptisms would have been at St Mary's Church, Stockport which was the main one at that time. I have looked at St Mary's for your Mark Meredith and haven't spotted him yet but the years up to about 1806 are really difficult to read so I could have missed him and it is possible that he was baptised at another church I do keep him in mind when I'm going through the various registers.

This may throw you completely off track but there is a Rev Meredith listed at St Peters in 1845 - no first name or initial given in Stockport Genealogical database!
There is also a Martha Meredith widow listed as having a will dated 1846 on the cheshire county web site, citing Bredbury as the town of death.
Just a twist - but they may be worth a look. Meredith is not too common a name for the area.
