Hi Catherine
I'm not sure he's the David Sharpe I'm looking for as he married Hannah Willis in 1867 and she is shown as his wife in 1871.
Thanks for looking anyway.
Regards

Talk about confusing!
I will definitely order the death certificate for Hannah Sharpe, to confirm.
I then decided to follow Catherine's lead regarding the possible re-marriage of David. Free BMD shows an entry for David Sharp (without the "e") for the Sep qtr 1873 in Ely 3b 355, the possible bride being either Ann Cross or Sarah Ann Cross. However, there is another entry for David Sharpe for the Dec qtr 1873 in Risbridge 4a 890, the possible bride being either Maria Phillips or Julia Webb.
Risbridge registration district contains the sub-district of Wickhambrook, where David is originally from!
So it would appear we are looking for David on the 1881 census, aged approx 57 - 61. His wife could be either Ann, Sarah Ann, Maria or Julia. The known children who should appear would be, Emma, aged 16, Julia, aged 13 and David aged 11.
I have ordered the death certificate for 1883, so hopefully that will give me an address and an informant which can be tied to one of the ladies mentioned above, Fingers crossed.
I really do appreciate your efforts so far.
Regards

The 2nd David you found appears to have married Julia and is in the Risbridge district here - RG11/1821 Folio 79 Page 36 - Duddery Road, Haverhill, Essex. He is 28, a Cloth Cutter born Haverhill and she is 27/9 also born Haverhill.
In 1891, Ann is now a widow and son John Sharp is now shown as John D, so possibly they were both officially "John David", but yours was known as David to avoid confusion with his father John.....
Daughter Julia appears to have married a George Lee in 1890 -
George Lee 22 Brickmaker Gilgal Littleport Julia 22 Blue Boar + lodger Wiliam Peckett age 72 Littleport Road, Brick Kiln Cottage, Ely St Mary Cambs 1891 RG12/1298 Folio 17 Page 1
I think the 1901 census ties the Cross/Sharpes together, although Ann seems to have gained a few years (40 in 1881, 44 in 1891 and 65 in 1901!), but if her son in law completed the census then he could have got the age wrong I suppose
1901 RG13/1546 Folio 9 Page 9 Shippea Hill, Ely Trinity, Cambs Christopher Newell 27 Teamster? on farm ("horse" written afterwards) Cambs Sebastapol Louisa 23 Ely Trinity Anne Sharpe widow mother in law 65 Ely Trinity Albert Cross nephew 14 Ordinary Ag Lab Cambs Prickwillow
Marriage - Louisa Sharpe March 1901 Vol 3b Page 707 Groom - Christopher Newell

Hi Cat
You may well be right regarding the 1881 census, however, the ages & names do differ somewhat:
David Sharpe 47 (1871); John D Sharp 50 (1881) Samuel Sharpe 8 (1871); Samuel Sharp 20 (1881) Julia Sharpe 3 (1871); Julia Sharp 16 (1881) David Sharpe 1 (1871) John Sharp 12 (1881)
As I said earlier, David's death cert for 1883 may yield some answers.
Regards

Glad you managed to resolve the puzzle with the death certificate. Thats the trouble with the censuses, some of our ancestors seemed to like changing their name, age, place of birth on each census!!
