Henry HOBBS c 1821 Bridgewater
« on: Saturday 19 April 08 11:24 BST (UK) »

Hi,
Does anyone know of a Henry Hobbs Cir 1821 who moved to Newport, Gwent.

I have him in the 61, 71 & 81 census's (all in Newport), but I can't find anything earlier about him other than he was born Bridgewater.

I have a few different Hobb family trees, but none offer this info.

Can anyone please help.

Yours
PeterY

Your topic heading states c. 1721 -and your post c. 1821 ?

Also gwent did not exist then -so assume you mean newport Monmouthshire -it's easier for look ups if you can put the county as it was then

Just trying to make it easier for doing look ups

Whoops The heading should be 1821  I was doing ten things at once, but that is no excuse really.
Thanks for spotting  Shocked  that in any case and for the prompt reply and thanks for the info given.
You have the right person, but I can't seem to go back to his parents.
There is a bit of decrepancy in Henry's date.  Undecided  Some place him as 1823 and others as 1814.

I did find a Richard 1797 and a John 1806 in Bridgewater poss Brothers.

The problem is if Henry is 1814 then they are too young to be his parents so at the moment I favour one of them for his parents and Henry being b1823.

What say you  Huh

Hi
me again.

He was in fact a Sawyer, but don't ask what that entailed.

I have just had a phone call from my sister who had been in contact with one of her husbands sisters.

She seems to think that Henry's parents might be Henry 179-something who died in 1828 in Bridgewater.  He married a Mary (they like their Marys don't they) from Bridgewater.

However she did say she is not too sure anymore.

What say you?

One small point which is not obvious but might help you with future searches.  Bridgwater in Somerset doesn't have an "e" in it.

Sawyer works with wood

Victorian occupations
Sawyer =carpenter, saws wood to boards

so not really a qualified carpenter

Hi

Thanks very much for that info (both of you).
I have noticed that some names drop letters as we go back, but the thought never entered my mind.
I'll redo my searches as you suggest without the "e".

I thought it might be something to do with sawing wood, but now I know exactly and can tell my sister.

Henry 179 something has now been remembered as Richard and there is two I can find.
One b1797 and the other b1800.  They could well be the same.

I will get there, but anyhelp will ne gratefully received as all help already received has been.

I will keep checking this posting and the other which I posted seeking Bridgewater parishes as you suggested.
Many thanks to all.
