Hi,
The existing cemetery opened in 1856, does anyone know where people from the area were buried before that?

Hi Andrea
From 1839 till 1856 many burials were at Galley's Gill Cemetery (also known as Rector's Gill), which I believe was towards the river from the church.

Lyn - the cemetery at Bishopwearmouth which was in use until the Bisopwearmouth Cemetery in Chester Road opened, was the Gill Cemetery, Thornton Place, the Bishopwearmouth Churchyard then being full.
The Gill Cemetery was intended to close, by Order of Council, in May 1854 but owing to the difficulty of obtaining another suitable place for burials, the Secretary of State allowed it to remain open until the Chester Road Cemetery was completed.

Hi Wearsider
Could you clarify where the Gill Cemetery was? Was it near the church?

Ashley - yes thr Gill Cemetery was quite close to the Church, slightly North-west of it. It was located between Silksworth Row and what were then the Lambton Coal Drops alongside the River Wear. Part of the area has been taken up by the new road system. It is shown on the earlier maps.
