Margate births 1792 - 1800
« on: Friday 18 April 08 19:45 BST (UK) »

Hi there.   We are looking for our g-g-g-grandmother, Mary Ann Mellish (or Melhuish, Mellhuish!!) who was born in Margate, Kent sometime between 1792 and 1801.    We have been looking for her birth for ages, thinking that she was from Plymouth as "In County" was given for her place of birth on the 1841 Census.   We have now tracked her down to Margate, Kent.  However due to her fluctuating ages on the 41,51,61,71 and 81 Censuses we are not sure of her exact year of birth.   It will be between 1792 and 1801!!!  Also her surname is spelled differently - it could be Mellish or Melhuish or Melluish.  If there is any kind Rootschatter out there who may have the Margate Parish Records we would be most grateful!

I don't know if you will find what you are looking for here, but it is worth a look.

Thanks.   I have tried Barry White's records but they do not cover the period 1792 - 1801, unfortunately.   I don't know whether these records are missing or have not been transcribed for some reason.    Does anyone know?

Our g-g-g-grandmother was born in Margate, Kent between 1792 and 1801.  Are there any parish records available for this period of time?   We have looked at Barry White's indexes but they do not cover this period.  Her name was Mary Ann Melhuish (Mellish, Melluish).  We are unsure of her age due to the fact that her age changes on all the censuses.   She died aged 92 in 1885 but she was 85 on the 1881 census!  We have hit a total brick wall if we cannot find Mary Ann's birth and should be so grateful if anyone out there has any information on this period of time.  Are there any other resources that we could try?  Thanks.

Hi Nooshie

There is a lookup offer for the parish registers of St John Thanet (otherwise known as Margate) on the Kent Lookup Exchange.  They are unindexed so you would need to be as specific as possible http://members.tripod.com/~jo42/knt.html

No.   We have e-mailed this person a couple of times but to no avail

It is a bit frustrating because we have spent years trying to trace the birthplace of this relative and have been down many wrong alleys!  Finally we know she was born in Margate between 1793 - 1801 ish (there are various discrepancies with her age on difference censuses).    We don't really know what to do next!  Any ideas?  Many thanks.

The closest and only similar sounding name I found in the whoel Margate St John's baptisms was a
Mary Mellish baptised 6th April 1800 to Joseph and Elizabeth Mellish.

Oddly there isn't one more, burial, baptism or marriage for this surname. The closest is MOLASH and no Joseph or Elizabeths.

Thankyou so much, this could be right, because two of Marys' children were called Joseph Melluish Andrews and her eldest girl was Elizabeth.
Thanks again

They must have been passing through or Joseph a Coastguard or similar.
If I ever come across anything else I will post it here
