William Hope
« on: Wednesday 16 April 08 18:25 BST (UK) »

While in Worcester History centre today, I was reading through a booklet on Herefordshire when I came across an account of a murder that took place in the village of Ullingswick.  It was in 1862 when a young girl was murdered whilst walking across a field on her way home.  The man who murdered her was called William Hope and he was found guilty and hanged on 5th April 1864.
Apparently the executioner made a real bad job of it and the man suffered a terrible death.
I have been trying to find out about my father's ancestry. His surname was Hope and so far i have only got as far as his grandfather John Hope. A few years ago I was talking to a cousin of mine and when i asked her about the Hope ancestry, she told me there was a couple of rogues in there. She never had chance to tell me more and is now too ill.
As you can imagine, it has made me wonder if William Hope was an ancestor and one of the so called rogues.
i would be grateful if anyone has any information on him, especially whether he was married and had children.
Also where abouts in herefordshire is Ullingswick?
many thanks
Jo

The Girl was Mary Corbett. Possibly this one 14 on the 1861 RG9/1827/97/5  living at Ullingswick born Ocle Prichard so he almost certainly Knew her well.

That's really interesting thanks so much for sharing the info with me. So it looks as though he never married. So the mystery continues.
Thanks once again
