Latin help please
« on: Saturday 19 April 08 19:53 BST (UK) »

Would some kind passing Latin expert be able to help me understand the following passage?  I found it in the title deeds of a public house (Three Horseshoes, Hinxworth, Hertfordshire) at the county record office and it appears to mention a Francis Stanton that I've been researching, but I can't tell what the document is actually saying!  I guess that the opening bit is introducing the parties to some agreement - William Dobson of Stanford in the parish of Southill, Bedfordshire and William Sale of Langford, Bedfordshire as well as Francis Stanton of Hinxworth, Hertfordshire, and I'm guessing that 'Centum Libris Bone et Legalis monete Anglie' is £100 of lawful English money, but beyond that I'm stumped.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks
Richard.

Richard

That's too much for my elementary Latin and it looks rather like dog Latin with a couple of abbreviations which makes it even more difficult!

I think there is a Latin tutorial on the National Archives site - if no-one else here comes to your aid, you could possibly have a look at that!

This is a response although the latin is rough and ready as was the Legal Latin of those times.

This is our translation  I seems to be a debt that is passed on from generation to generation on both sides.

Let it be known by  (to) all present that we William Dobson of Stanford in the parish(?) of Southill in the district of Bedford, Miller and William Sale of Langford in the district of Bedford, Architect we are firmly bound and obliged to give Francis Staunton of Hinksworth in the district of Harford (Generofum?)  One Hundred Pounds of good and legal English money either to Francis Staunton or to his Court appointed Executors and Administrators,  or to anyone assigned by him in good faith . This obligation applies to both  us and our executors and adminstrators.
Signed in front of witnesses the 28th April   in the reign of our  Anne by the grace of God defender of the faith   Queen of England Scotland and Ireland in the fifth year of her reign 1706

Hope this helps.

Generally this type of document referred to a land or title transfer, and was usually a type of court settlement.

Darren

PS As far as my Latin goes, I think you are pretty much on the money!
