|
As per my previous thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,299090.0.html
Can anyone help with an actual Parish Record ( rather than BT) lookup for this marriage please
Thomas Newton married Sarah (Nelson/ Wilson?) on 2nd Feb 1834 at St John's Newcastle on Tyne

Ahhh thanks for that Jennifer 3 out of 4 records can't be wrong, it looks as if Sarah Nelson wins the prize....and the Bishop's clerk needed a cup of tea and a bit of a lie down!

ladybird,
This a.m. I saw (film of ) actual parish record of the marriage.
I wish I could give you a definitive answer to your query..... the writing is much less clear than what you have already repruduced... writing shows up as very faint grey.... and the two filmreaders I tried very difficult to focus....
The letter "e" in Newton was clearly an "e" as in modern longhand, not like "E" in Newton , in your reproduction... which is almost like a capital "E".
The second letter in the bride's surame looks like letter "i", but with no dot above... and it is similarly written to the letter "e" in Newton, but with no upper loop.
Both Newton and both have a stylised first letter, written with italic-type pen....The middle stroke in the N of Newton is about twice the thickness of the two other strokes.
The third of four strokes of the initial letter of the bride's surname is similarly thicker. The first two strokes are either the beginning of a "W" or a fancy sqiggle then the start of a "N".
Marriage was by banns... but unfortunately did not have time to get at those !
Stop me somebody.
My opinion.... 70% Wilson 30% Nelson
