mouse going to sleep
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 06:19 BST (UK) »

Hi All
Can anyone help me please, on my spare computer if I do not move the mouse for a few minutes it just freezes and it takes a lot of button presses to wake it up again.
All the settings are the same on both my computers for mouse /keyboard and power saving so it has got me beat!

As far as I know mice do not sleep.

Possibly it is worn out or very dirty inside.  It is amazing how much dirt gets inside a mouse.

If dirt is not the problem and there is nothing wrong phyiscally with the contacts then try deleting and reinstalling the mouse in Device Manager.

Delete the mouse and reboot the PC and let Windows detect it and build a profile for it and see if that works.

Hello dollylee
I have tried the cheese that didn't work though, the new twig on my tree is just as cute ( number twelve grandchild, christmas and birthdays are getting expensive!!!!!!!).

    Hi Downside
I have tried removing the mouse and keyboard ,no joy. I have also tried three different mice ie wired, wireless and I am now using a pad on a new keyboard still the same, I have downloaded the up to date drivers for keyboard , graphics card and screen.
It seems weird to me that if I don't use it for ten minutes or so I have to bash the return key a couple of times before the curser will move again which can be a pain as it then sometimes shuts a window or program down and as I mainly use that computer for looking at my family tree whilst searching on my other comuter for entrys on bdms or ancestry etc.
The computer is newish I only built it last year so it is fairly up to date in fact newer than my main one which I don't have any problems with and the same progams are running on both.
I guess it is something I will have to live with!

Cheers David

Know this sounds crazy but I had trouble with a brand new computer freezing last year and one of the possible problems was a very busy patterned mouse mat. Was told that they've been known to cause problems so try using mouse on plain surface. Don't know if it'll solve this problem but it can't hurt to try it.

I suspect, from the information that you have provided, that it is not the mouse that is the problem.

I'm not sure if you are using a USB mouse or not but if so then you may need to check the settings for Power Management on the USB Root Hub in Device Manager.  You may have a number of them so do the following for each one:-

Right click Root Hub and select Properties and then click on the Power Management tab.  Deselect Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

See if that does anything.

You can always change it back again if it doesn't work.

Hi aghadowey
Thanks but I don't us a mouse mat just a plain work surface

Hi Downside
I have unchecked the roots hub and everything else on the device manager list. thanks for that, I did not know that the roots hub had power mangement, you learn something every day!
It is still playing up, I guess it is something I will have to live with.
               Thanks a lot

:)While visiting friends last week, they mentioned a similar problem with their mouse.....lol....(no cheese given Wink)

And this is going to sound crazy, but as a learner  I asked if they had cleaned the inside of the mouse....lol....a few curses by my friends.....lol....I then cleaned the mouse for them....yuk!! the amount of dirt inside was ooohh!! it now works great. funny thing is they never use a mouse mat, just the desk surface....cheers Summer Smiley

From time to time I find that with my mouse there is difficulty  in deleting etc.,  When I open it up there is dirt on the two rods which are operated by the ball.  After gently cleaning the rods with a knive blade it works OK again.

I gather this is an optical mouse? so no cleaning inside...

Have you tried swapping this mouse with the one that works perfectly on your other pc and see if the problem remains to travels with the mouse.

I gather from your previous response, its a USB mouse. Have you tried a PS2/USB adaptor and plug into the ps2 connection.  They cost less than a few quid.

ps - you didn't mention the brand and type of mouse you are using - it might help

Hi
At the moment I am using a keyboard with a built in touch pad but it still , does it just the same, if I don't us the curser for  a while I have to  bash the return key two or three times before i decides to wake up. I have tried all of the stuff suggested above with no joy so I have just accepted it now  hay ho !

cheers  David

Just chucking some thoughts at you.... nicely though Wink

Undecided  I have googled around and other than doing the checks Downside mentioned and trying other mice, plus driver updates, which you  have already done, it appears to point to a power overload. i.e power supply not sufficient to run all your  equipment and is shutting  the keyboard/mouse down. Do you have lots of peripherals attached to your pc?

When did the problem start? Has it always done it, if not, can you think of any hardware/sofware changes you may have done around the time it started playing up?
I had a Windows update about 5 months ago that totally threw my pc, it wouldn't restart straight away if it was left off overnight. I reinstalled everything which didn't alter anything.  I ended up leaving my pc on constant for about 6 weeks. I then tested it again after another update and the problem had disappeared  Roll Eyes a system restore didn't cure the problem  either.

You say you have built it yourself, maybe the only way is to get it checked out by a professional/experienced person who builds pcs. They may be able to spot the problem straight away.

I use a pin to get the fluff of the rods, then a cotton bud to polish them Grin
