Walmer Poor Law records entry for 1824 Bullen family
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 07:20 BST (UK) »

Hi all, I am not sure where to ask this so please point me to the appropriate place if this is not correct board.
This is my 2nd post only as I like to investigate myself unless intrigued or stumped.

I am interested in an entry in the Poor Law records for Walmer, Kent, 1824 for William Richard Bullen (b 1805 d 1886 Walmer) and his wife Mary Ann Solly (b 1805 Braybourne d 1886 Walmer) and child Ann Catherine (b Walmer 8 months in 1824).
In these Poor Law records, it lists their Parish as Morning Thorpe, Norfolk and yet William and his daughter were born in Walmer, Kent and his wife in Braybourne, Kent.

Arch/Ref U3/60/13/98
Year 1824
Surname: Bullen Fornames: William and Mary
St: Family (1 infant)
Type: RO out
Parish  MorningThpe,NFK
Notes: Mariner

Another family member thinks that the RO is a “Removal Oder” and out means that Walmer would not pay poor relief for them in the event they needed it. Given their births, I would have thought they had settlement rights to Walmer but Walmer listed their Parish (and thus settlement?) in Morningthorpe, Norfolk.
I know there are a lot of Bullens (Boleyns) in Norfolk and the Anne Boleyn connection is well known in our family history.

I know William’s father died in Walmer but do not know who Mary Ann Solly’s parents are but assume they are all Kent people. But I am intrigued by this Norfolk listing in the Poor Law records and wonder if anyone has some clues about the reasons for it being mentioned.

I found the helpful entry re Poor Law records in Norfolk:

Thanks for any help or advice, Regards Marie

Yes, I would agree with that.

I wonder if the Removal order would hold any further information?  Also, I would suggest trying to trace any parish chest material ie. settlements for Morningthorpe.  It could be that William had settlement there due to previous employment/apprenticeship etc. Undecided

Hi and thankyou to you both for your helpful replies and for the pm.
It is amazing how I have become distracted by this tiny, tiny piece of trivia.
I didn't think of the employment angle.
My elderly mum knows a lot about the family but when I ask her about Poor Laws she starts getting upset and relaying stories from the early years and a workhouse near or in Deal where she remembers some of the family dying...but it must have been well before her time I am sure and is just a childhood horror story.

After 2 months of writing up my notes from a trip to Deal 11 years ago I am only 1 inch down into the box of notes and am going to keep just chipping away at this little mystery, on the side.
My mum is also ill and as the last of her Dewell line, I better start writing her stories down now.
I need to work on her Marsh Dewell lines too.

I have relayed your idea to a family member in England who found this mystery.
Thanks again for your generous time. Oy, Oy, Oy. Marie
