1851 cencus needle in haystack!
« on: Thursday 17 April 08 19:31 BST (UK) »

Undecided Undecided Can anyone help me with a look up for John Smith (what a wonderful name) born in Sutton on Trent in 1846.  I am trying to find him on the 1851 cencus to establish who his parents were.
    Thanks, Pat.

Hi Pat

None b Sutton Trent in 1851 I'm afraid.  I did a search a year either side of 1846 and it threw up 27 entries - 25 if you ignore the 2 with middle names

Same in 1861

The 1871 has a much older John Smith b Sutton on the Hill living in Church Broughton but I checked the 1851 and they didn't have a son called John

Thanks to you both,
Right, I'm working backwards from the 1881 cencus, when John Smith, born 1846 Suton on trent was living in Clowne with his 1st wife Mary and family

I also have him on the1891 cencus with his 2cnd wife Elizabeth and family.

If I am on the right lines, I then have him again on the 1871 cencus living as a boarder in St. Alkmund, Derby. household 31.

I cannot latch onto him on the 1861 cencus, which was why I thought if I went back to the 1851, when he was a child, that I might get another foothold there. It is not an easy name to pin down!!

If anyone can be of any help tracking him down I would be extremely grateful,
       Cheers, Pat

Thanks Pam,
I hadn't found that one, and that sounds quite likely, doesn't it? That , hopefully, might get me going again with these wretched Smiths.

I have read that Smith can be a Romany name, and we've definately some of those sort of genes in the family judging by the black-haired, dark-eyed children that keep popping up here and there in each generation, so it could get even more difficult to trace as i go back.

Still, with the help we get on here, someone always comes up with something useful,

Thanks again,
     Cheers, Pat.

You are welcome. If there is anything else you would like me to look at feel free.

By the way I married a Smith so I know what you mean.  I have a brick wall with Smith but is in Cornwall area.  Later they moved to Derbyshire Peak District so I don't think there is a connection, sadly

Hi Pam,
If you come across my John Smith anywhere on the 1851 cencus, as I still haven't established where he was born, it would be a help. I've come up with Sutton on Trent , but nobody could find him on the cencus as born that year. It could be a case of him being registered a few months after birth, thus making registration the next year. I've had that a couple of times in my previous research, and, when you know a definate date of birth, it really throws you! Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

      Thanks again,
          Pat.
