John Dobson - death please
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 13:14 BST (UK) »

Hi

I'm having great difficulty with this family as other posts will testify! It doesn't help either, in that it is a reasonably common name.

However ...

The chap I am after is plain and simple JOHN DOBSON and I believe that he would have died in Scarborough.

He was born in Wakefield around about 1774 or so the census details would suggest, viz ...

1841 census: he is a clothier aged 60 (rounded) (HO107/1340 folio 39 page 13)
1851 census: he is a cloth merchant aged 76 (HO107/2368 folio 258 page 20)
1861 census: he is a widowed cloth manufacturer aged 87 (RG9/3616 folio 42 page 25)
1871 census: he is nowhere to be seen, so I presume he died between 1861 and 1871.

His last few addresses are in Scarborough, where his descendents are living (Hope Street) which leads me to believe that he died in Scarborough.

However, I have a copy of the Dobson deaths in Scarborough, and he does not feature. My only other thought is that his son James and his wife Ann were living in Sheffield (1861) and Myton, Hull (1871 census) at the time of his death - did he die there?

Can anyone help me out please?

A John Dobson died Mar qtr. 1863 - ref. 9d 139 - Hull but as this was prior to ages being given can't be sure this was him.   However, this was the only likely one in the places you mention.

Have you browsed the freebmd for his death? May not be where you'd expect to find him dying but in the absence of other ideas, why not give that a go.

Hi Annette and Charlotte

Yes - I found the Hull chap on FreeBMD and I'm actively pursuing that line of enquiry - we'll see what it produces.

As for generally using FreeBMD, 1861-1871 throws up an awful lot of JDs!!  Roll Eyes I'm looking into them ...

I'm sure it does- one of my Hargreaves married a SMITH- I haven't even bothered to chase that one- that'd be a way to go completely daft.
