Hi,
My Gran was Rom, and from Notting Dale. Ellen 'Queenie' Rixon 1905 -1967
Although a Rixon I think her father's father was the only native English in her.
My Gran's Gran was Sarah Amelia Jones born: Notting Dale 1862 Her parents: Henry John Jones born: 1829 & Isabella Jane Hancock born: Notting Dale 1829
Her mother was Ellen Paxton born: Notting Dale 1883 Her parents were William Paxton born Paddington 1846 and Mary Alice Ann Ashman born Paddington 1858.
Have also wondered for a long time if there was a link to the family with Granny Hearn; Mary Ann Hearn nee Jones.
I'm not so much looking for advice as hoping that the above mean something to one of the, who can perhaps share something official records could never deliver. Sorry if that's a bit vague, but I have so little that is tangable about this part of my family that anything is welcome.
Best wishes
Andrew

What makes you think she was a traveller (Gypsy)?

The reason that I asked was that a quick check in the 1881 census shows William Paxton, a housepainter living with Mary and two children at 24 St Ervans Rd Paddington. All the other information that you have given doesn't seem to fit with a Romany family. In particular what seems to be fixed abodes in a built up area and the consistent surnames.

They might have settled. I know the majority of my ancestors settled between 1850 to 1900 but most carried on marrying within the blood - for posterity's sake I suppose. My ancestors had fairly consistent surnames as well. Only some changed their surnames as well (I'm pretty sure the Grants did but my Munday Romany ancestors never changed their names on the census - they might have done for other purposes). Except for misspelling their name which happened constantly. Trying to find Thomas Colebourne Munday/Thomas Coburn Monday/Thomas Colbourn Mundy etc etc...

Hi David, Roma have long lived in that area, many having settled in houses long before the time of the 1881 census. You will find no record of my family living a travelling life I am pretty sure. They are however racially Rom. I understand what you are saying, but state authored documents will never tell the reader the whole story, as I am sure you know. Andrew

I agree about Notting Dale, my family settled there and on the census they don't stand out as Rom but I know they were. They travelled between Kensington and Warminster in Wiltshire up until about 1850 something. A very long trek back to the family homeland! But when you see them on the census you would think they were completely sedentary. When you look at the births and baptisms of their children they travel all over in between the censuses. My great grandad was a half-Rom house painter from Notting Dale as well.
Also in an article about Notting Dale travellers it said that although the people lived in houses often they had their caravans outside in the street.
