Hi
After picking up this thread a while ago I went to yahoo to join the speirheritage group there. I signed up and everything - and that was 2 weeks ago.
today I have had an email from yahoo saying they have cancelled my attempt to join because the moderator hadn't cleared it. In fact there had been no activity on the group in all that time.
Pity, I was looking forward to some serious research there. Obviously the moderator hadn't checked the group in that time.

The moderator  has not been able to be as active as she would have liked recently. I have been in touch with her recently and will try to sort this out.

Fao Yvonne
I am directly descended from Mary's brother James Speir b. 1825, he is my great-grandfather. His younger son James was my grandfather, I am the youngest daughter of his son James. I am just wondering what your husband's connection is? I have quite a bit of info. on James if you need it.

Hi, may I input to this thread? I have noticed several times the name Spier and West Kilbride, Ayrshire. In my line, I have a Robert Spier Workman born and died in Saltcoats - no more than 8 miles from West Kilbride. His parents, Archibald and Lilias (ms Pattison) Workman, were born in WK circa 1822 and 1824 respectively and also married there on 13 December 1834.

Is it coincidence he has the name "Robert Spier" and his family originate from WK?

Regards.

A person's middle name, especially in Scotland is even to this day is often derived from the female line. It might be worth going back a generation or 2 to see where the Spiers come in.

I have a Mgt Spiers married 26 July 1828 but she is married to a John Maitland

How about all that are keeping an eye on this thread give their connection to the Spier(S) (Speir (S)) family.
I will try to find out what I can from the speirheritage site. May be we can all add a bit to our trees.

The following site is an excellent point of reference:
http://www.ayrshire-roots.co.uk/index1.php

It contains an Intimation database from the "Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald"
which was the local newspaper for that part of the Ayrshire coast including West Kilbride.

A second excellent site is www.threetowners.com  which is designed primarily for Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston but also covers surrounding towns. It contains a genealogy section and is well worth a visit.

I have put my research aside for a time to take a break but remain interested in the SPIER family.
