1841 Stockwell
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 16:39 BST (UK) »

Could someone please look me up William Stockwell, born 1792, North Nibley on the 1841 census? He is a widow in the 1851 and I want to see if his wife is on the 1841 and if it was an Ann...if it is, then I know who she was and when they married, etc...just needing the final piece of puzzle.  Wink

He (a woolen cloth dyer aged 63) was in Slade Lane, Dursley with Ann aged 62, Esther 20 and Samuel 10.

Regards

Chas

P.S.  There was no William Stockwell baptized in N.N. in 1792 so perhaps his wife insisted that he was the older!!!!

Hmmm...this is weird.
I mean not only are the ages off but I was expecting them to be in Bibury because thats where they were in 1851 and that's where my Esther was born in 1829, and she should only have been around 12 in 1841. I never knew about a Samuel but always wondered if there were other children besides Esther and Hannah...which leads me to my next question...where is Hannah?

These are the only two marriages I can find for a William Stockwell:-

William Stockwell & Jane Parton
8th May 1815 at Withington - Banns

William Stockwell & Ann Millard
8th March 1818 at North Nibley - Banns

Well poohy.

I was chasing the William and Ann route because of his birthplace being listed as North Nibley but it looks like its the other one.

Although Hannah is still missing. lol. She was a couple years older then Hester...and interestingly enough on the 1851 census her birth place was listed as Withington but on every other census it was Bibury.

Tk you EVERYONE for all your hard work...at least I'm not heading the wrong way now.

Bear in mind that the birthplace one thinks is where one was born might only be the place in which one remembers growing up.  Quite ofted birthplaces are put down by enumerators as being where the census was carried out.  Just imagine an enumerator asking the question, "Where are you from?", ..... "Idiot!" thinks the the other, "I'm from here!" is the reply!! Cheesy
