Hi there,
I am looking for a photograph or picture for Rev Dr Alexander Crombie. He was born 1760 in Aberdeen and died 1840 London. I have tried googling, but no such luck as yet. If anyone can help me here, I would be most appreciative.
Other information I have on him is: He was educated at the Marischal College in that city, where he took the degree of M.A. about 1777, and was created LL.D about 1798. He succeeded to Thornton Castle through a distant relation. His body was interred at Marylebone Church. . He left 3 sons, Alexander Crombie, Esquire M.A. of Trinity College, Camb and a Barrister-at-Law of Lincolns Inn, now resident at Phesdo House in Kincardinshire; Lewis Crombie, Esq, a Solicitor, and one of the Baillies of Aberdeen; Thomas Crombie, Esq, Major in the 60th Regiment on Foot, and one daughter, Jane, married in 1823 to Captain H.A. Eliot, R.N

Given that photography was in its infancy in 1850s, I think it unlikely that a photo will turn up. Fox Talbot and Daguerre had only just perfected their individual techniques in the late 1830s. I don't think commercial studios really got going until mid 1850s.
Perhaps there may be a portrait at Thornton Castle or at Marischal College in Aderdeen?

Hi there,
I found this if it will help: A very pleasing portrait of Dr Crombie was published in 1832, enlarged from a miniature by William Booth, and drawn on stone by R.J. Lane, A.R.E. (from The Gentlemans Magazine)

That may be the only likeness there is. William Booth, minituarist may help. Have you tried Groves Dictionary of Art & Artists (I think that's its title - my local reference library has a copy)?
