finding george.......
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 18:59 BST (UK) »

i have reached the point before 1837 and just need a push in the right direction...................

i have an ancestor:  George Roughton b 1809, maried to Elizabeth

this is them on 1841 census HO107/803/15

i have them in 1851.  i want to try and find the marriage of this couple.  Their first child born c.1837 so i assume their marriage was before registration.  (and possibly their births?)

Am i right in assuming i look at the IGI?  i have had a look in the links and can't find exactly what i am looking for.
is it www.familysearch.org?  if so i am not having any luck.
can anyone help with some info please? Huh

kind regards

Hi Sara

It might be helpful if you could tell us where all these events took place ie. birthplaces of the parents and children and where they were in the census Wink

Northampton is a hard one on IGI ....mostly member submitted for the family ....

George Roughton to Elizabeth Page   8 March  1831
Kettering  ( member sub not from records)

George William Roughton bap 24 Dec 1809 Kettering to William & Elizabeth.

A birth cert of a child after 1838 onwards would confirm mothers maiden name.

Unless someone here has the records for Kettering.

Hi Sara

I see that they are in Kettering Northamptonshire(just up the road from me  Grin)

I would ask a Moderator to move this post to the Northants look up board.

You'll find one or two people there with access to some very useful records Grin

Regards

Hi sara,

Not all records are on IGI and some are "submitted" which must be treated with caution.

You will need to look for parish records;  some are available of www.familyhistoryonline.net  The index is free, then it is pay to view.

thanks for all the information so quickly, i am amazed:

George born in northamptonshire and still there in 1841.

tazzie, where did you find that information?  can i find it on the web somewhere?

i am going to start to need to research this time period and not sure where to look.

thankyou, sara Grin

i have now found the marriage tazzie mentioned.  i will order a birth cert to see if this is the correct couple.

what is the difference between submitted and records? and how do you clarify the information?

An extracted entry is taken from the register and has been copied to film by LDS. I f it is submitted a church member may have followed the family as part of their tree and has entered the details. Often dates say "around" or have no dates at all so often mean they have not been checked and a guesstimate has been made.

In the absense of the wonderful Sandy  Grin OTP stands for Of This Parish.

Although I don't think it means that they HAD to have been born there, but certainly were living there when they married.

See, I said Northants board had people(Sandy) with access to some great stuff!

Hi Sara and Carol and Cuz Tazzie Grin

The information would have been taken from the original Bishop's Transcripts.

Alot of Kettering's main Parish Church Records were not available to the Record Office,
so the B. T's would have been a copy of the original and therefore a good source.

Only banns had to be read in the village 3 weeks prior to marriage although correct if
I am wrong residency had to be at least 6 weeks.
