CHATTERLEY
« on: Friday 25 April 08 21:33 BST (UK) » |

I have an Ann Chatterley, of full age married on 3 Feb 1861 in Lambeth, Surrey. Her address is just given as High Street.
I have visited the LMA and Lambeth Archives without any luck and it is just possible someone might be researching this name. My interest is that she is my great great grandmother on my father's side.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Unfortunately that is all the information I have on her. She married a William Harwood of the same address and I have quite a lot of information on him. However where either of them came from prior to Lambeth I do not know.
Yours,
Wyndham

Catherine Sandys, I will find out where you went.

Do you have their marriage cert, if so can you post all the details that it contains.
Have you found them in the census after their marriage. Without further details, its not going to be easy looking for them.
Any info however small.

Using information from one of your earlier posts this looks like the most likely census entry for the couple. They may have married in London because both were under age.

1861 census RG9 51 folio 94 53 Ponsby Place St John Westminster William Harwood 20 Head Married Gunmaker Birmingham Warwickshire Anne Harwood 20 Wife Married Tailoress Birmingham Warwickshire
Ann's marriage certificate details would confirm whether this 1851 census entry is a fit for her.
HO107 2055 folio 218 11 Court 1 House Howard Place Joseph Chatterley 44 Head Married Brass founder Birmingham Warwickshire Charlotte Chatterley 42 Wife Married Birmingham Warwickshire Thomas Chatterley 18 Son Birmingham Warwickshire Ann Chatterley 9 Daughter Birmingham Warwickshire
ANN CHATTERLEY Birth: 26 DEC 1841 Christening: 26 DEC 1842 Saint Martin, Birmingham, Warwick Father: JOSEPH CHATTERLEY Mother: CHARLOTTE

Thank you all for your helpful and very interesting replies. I originally posted this on the one name forum as I was interested in the name Chatterley as it appears it is not that common, hence the lack of detail. However, the moderator moved it to Surrey.
The marriage was on 3 Feb 1861 at St Mary's Lambeth. Her father is shown as Joseph Chatterley, gun maker and his is John Harwood, mercantile clerk. A rather strange occupation for someone presumably hailing from Birmingham! As suggested they were obviously under age.
Following the marriage they obviously moved across the river to the opposite bank and then returned to Birmingham, where I have them residing at 'the back of 312 Summer Lane, Birmingham' in 1866. After that I have no trace of her although he was in India in the Corps of Armourers in 1882.
My next task will be to try and find out a little more detail regarding both deaths and William Harwood's birth. I will be going to TNA later in the year once the refurbishment dust has settled to obtain his service records.
Thank you all once again.

Be careful a gunmaker isn't a brass founder and Chatterley isn't that rare a surname. Never be so sure that everything is quite so obvious.

Thank you for your latest offering. I am now becoming somewhat confused!
I agee with you that there is a big difference between a brass founder and a gun maker. Also when William Harwood returned to Birmingham he was a gunfinisher journeyman. So I would suggest ruling out the Chatterley brass founder and am considering the 65 year old Joseph Chatterley as it also shows a 9 month old Ann. It's interesting that no wife is shown, presumably dead? (Looking at the Chatterley families shown, they really did not vary much when it came to christian names!)
You state that Chatterley is not as rare as I thought but on checking local directories around here, I am unable to find any. However it is probably fairly well known in the Midlands.

FreeBMD has lots of Chatterleys and so do the censuses.
The 1841 and 1851 census entries show Ann with her parents Joseph and Ann. The 1841 census shows what would appear to be her paternal grandfather also called Joseph as the head of household aged approximately 65 (adult ages, those over 15, on the 1841 census are usually rounded down to the nearest 5). Ann's parents seem to have left Birmingham for London in the early 1850s.
A possible but unproven baptism for Ann's father Joseph
JOSEPH CHATTERLEY Birth: 08 AUG 1810 Christening: 22 OCT 1810 Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick Father: JOSEPH CHATTERLEY Mother: MARY
with a sibling
JOHN WARD CHATTERLEY Christening: 24 MAY 1804 Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick Father: JOSEPH CHATTERLEY Mother: MARY
A possibility for Joseph Chatterley senior on the 1851 census
HO107 2051 folio 365 Howard Street Birmingham James Longford 28 Head Married Shoemaker Warwick Warwickshire Mary Longford 28 Wife Married Pearl Button Carder Birmingham Emma Longford 6 Daughter Birmingham Mary Longford 2 Daughter Birmingham James Longford 1 month Son Birmingham Joseph Chatterly 72 Widower Lodger Gunsmith Birmingham
Possible marriage
Marriages Dec 1843 Chatley Mary Birmingham 16 431 Longford James Birmingham 16 431

Thanks once again. I go along with your latest posting although Joseph snr (retired) appears 3 years younger! As you point out, Jospeh, the son bailed out to London which ties up with the address at St Botolph's in the city.
I will study all your postings again tomorrow and decide for definite? if I am on the right track.
