Now Sevenoaks interests me as well as part of my family come from Westerham and Edenbridge and I have to date found it very difficult to find pre 1837 records for these places.  I'll have a look at their website.

If these local libraries get involved in family history it could bode well for keeping local libraries open in the future!

Depending where you are in East Sussex, you might find it easier to drop in at East Surrey Family History Society's Reasearch Centre in Lingfield just over the border from East Sussex. It is in the Community Centre in the town. They have transcripts and indexes of Burstow baptisms and marriages to 1839 and burials to 1815 and transcripts of Horne baptisms and burials to 1840.

There are very helpful people on hand to show you what else they have as well and it only costs (I think) a £1 a day to search there if you aren't a member. Open usually 2nd Saturday (10 to 4) and 4th Wednesday (10 to 2), except this month it is open on 16th rather than today, so you still have a chance to get there.

Just want to say thanks for the tip Peter, and it was nice to meet you this morning.  What a great bunch of people and I have come home with so much corrected and new information.

I'm sure we'll probably meet again at Lingfield.

Thanks Peter

I found quite a lot of useful information.

Thing is I shall have to come again because it's brought up a whole load more questions!  Roll Eyes

Thanks everyone for your help, I finally got around to visiting Lingfield Library yesterday to check out the parish registers there.

A beautiful building and very helpful staff.  I shall be using it again in the future for Lingfield PRs, a much pleasanter and quicker drive from here than Woking.

Can I just urge people if your local library or a library in a town useful to your research has these facilities use them, it's another reason for libraries to stay open.  Smiley
