Could anybody tell me where I might find any old photographs of the old school next to the Kirkpatrick Juxta Church at Beattock, Scotland. I would appreciate any information on the school Books, photos etc. Regards Eric17w
It may be worth contacting the new school. According to the following webpage, there are old log books in existance somewhere. I don't know if they are held by the school, in the Archive Centre in Dumfries, or elsewhere.
Hi, I have a photo of the old schoolhouse Beattock. My father went there as a child. the photo is not digital but I could scan it and send it that way, hopefully... cheers norma
Hi Norma, Many thanks for reply. I would love to have a copy of your photo if it's possible. The reason for my interest is that my daughter has just purchased the old school (the inside is now totally different and is a lovely home). My email address is annwitheric@sky.com Once again many thanks for your kind reply Regards Eric
Hi Eric. To see a photo of what the photographer describes as almost certainly an old school house go to www.geograph.org.uk and in the search boxes enter Old School near Beattock.
For what it's worth, that looks like the old school to me, but it looks like a reasonably recent photo, and I think the school has been there a long time. My grandmother was Agnes Paterson, one of 11 children living at Buckrigg in the second half of the 19th C, and she attended it. I pass the old school every time I call at the graveyard at Kirkpatrick Juxta, and was there a couple of weeks ago. A few years ago I think it was turned into an outdoor centre, and then the past few years looks like a private house? I'm sure someone in the area will know better than me whether that is even the original building
Sorry ot hijack this thread but I wonder if anyone who contributed here knows of a teacher called Margaret, (Maggie), Blyth from Moffat who may have been a teacher or headteacher at Beattock School? She was born approx 1882, so the time scale would be early 20th century up to the 1940's.
