hi my grandfather is from the former yugoslavia,a serbian who during world war two was in the yugoslav army in the homeland otherwise known as a chetnik.cutting a long story short he had to flee yugoslavia when it came under communist rule and spent time in camps for displaced persons in germany before coming to england as an alien in 1947. he never spoke serbian in front of his family so none of us can speak it which now leaves a problem,as all the papers that belonged to him are mostly in serbian, some in cyrillic and i dont know where i could get these papers translated without to much expense??? im trying to piece together his life before coming to england but with the recent troubles in the former yugoslavia i dont know where any records would be kept or if they still survive.can any body help??? id be grateful for any suggestions you may have.
many thanks pat

Are there any Serbian groups or places that Serbs would meet in your area? Perhaps a social club or church? If so, perhaps you could find someone to tell you what the documents say.
hi thankyou for your suggestion, but my area has every nationality but serbian it would seem, the nearest church to me is about 40 miles.would the church help do you think if i contacted them???
best wishes pat

Couldn't hurt to contact the church and explain your problem. Is there a university near you that would have foreign students? - although prblem might be that the language has changed a bit over the years and younger people might find it difficult to read old script (this has been a problem I've had with German and Danish letters).
its also made harder i think with the fact that it is written in the cyrillic alphabet, there is sites online that explain it,but when trying to sort through it,it still doesnt make sense to me so maybe im doing something wrong.
