1901 census for Ashby De La Zouch
« on: Monday 21 April 08 11:59 BST (UK) »

Hello,
I have just found my ancestor on the 1891 census in the parish of Oakthorpe
and Donisthorpe, Ashby De La Zouch. She was Eliza Langford born in Shropshire, a servant for Joseph Hurley, widow, colliery blacksmith born Nuneaton, Warwickshire. I think she married Joseph Hurley in 1893 (freebmd site shows a  marriage ) Eliza would have been a widow herself by 1892.
Hopefully on the 1901 census she will be showing as Eliza Hurley.
Does anyone have the 1901 census for Ashby De La Zouch.
Thank you in anticipation.
Jan

Ohhh Cat beat me to it   Smiley

Looking at that census though they are not in Oakthorpe but in Donisthorpe about 400 yards from where I am sitting now

Joseph died in 1905 and Eliza in 1911 and both are buried in the local cemetary

Thank you very much Cat.  I have been searching for ages for Eliza as her
first husband died in the workhouse 1892. I just assumed she carried on until she died, but then someone found a marriage etc and made me think again.
DebbieG when you say they are both buried in the local cemetery. Do you have any further details of that ?

You are both fantastic. Only placed the query this morning.

There isn't much I am afraid - no stone(s) as far as I can see

The burial records are

1905 28   7 Hurley Joseph   h/o -- Donisthorpe age 57 of Mansfield Terrace Mrs Kirk of Donisthorpe grave no. 1713
1911 12   7 Hurley Eliza of Donisthorpe 78 Mrs Ward of Donisthorpe grave no. 2371

The other name on the records is the person who paid the money for the grave,  at this time in the village it was often a midwife type person who laid the body out and saw to some of the arrangements for the family

Thank you very much.

This is more info than I expected, when I asked for the 1901 census details.
I can now add what happened to Eliza to my tree.

Thanks Jan
