Trying to find details of burials of any Kenwards in the churchyards in Lewes. (Not the main Council cemetery.) Where to look ? Also any pictures of shops belived to be greengrocers or confectioners owned by Kenwards.
Thanks.

Hi Can you give a better idea of dates? The Sussex moderator, Chrisin1066land, has a vast knowledge of Lewes records but narrowing it down will help him. He has been away on holiday but I am sure he will help as soon as he is back online. Andrea

Thanks for reply. Probably looking at 1890-1930 for burials. The shops around 1890 on. It seems they had one in the early 1950s also. Certainly there was a Kenward greengrocers in Wellington Street for many years.

Hi Facellia
Sorry I was not able to answer your query earlier, but as Sillgen said we were on holiday in the Peak District
These are the burials in St John Sub Castro between 1800 and 1993
1879 December 30 Kenward Beatrice f 0.4 OTP 1802 July 6 Kenward Eleanor f 1832 June 17 Kenward Eleanor f 62 1907 November 6 Kenward Ernest Thomas m 1 St Martins Lane 49 St Michaels 1818 February 22 Kenward Harriet f 32 1819 February 28 Kenward Harriet f infant 1826 March 8 Kenward John m infant 1857 April 21 Kenward Mary f 77 Head, Widow Laundress, Parish relief St Marys Lane Herstmonceux 1862 February 2 Kenward Mary Georgina f 1.1 1825 September 8 Kenward Robert m 52 1900 August 15 Kenward Rose f The Union 44 1838 February 7 Kenward Sarah f infant 1825 August 12 Kenward Thomas m 10 Brighton 1898 February 16 Kenward William m 69 OTP
After 1850 when the cemeteries act came in to force; unless you had a designated plot in a churchyard, most people would be interred in the main cemetery in Lewes.
But I will check other graveyards for you

Hi again
Looking through some of my archives I notice that in 1871 James Kenward aged 38 from Isfield, Sussex lived at No 4 Wellington Street, Lewes where he was a Greengrocer and had a family of 7. In the November 1868 election for the single borough seat at the General Election he voted for Lord Pelham, Liberal as against William Langham, Conservative.
Incidentally there are several other Kenwards mentioned as follows:
Kenward Amram aged 25, Fruiterer/Greengrocer of High Street, Lewes Kenward John aged 48, of Maresfield, Florist in 154 High Street, Lewes Kenward Jireh aged 65, Harnessmaker at 26 High street, Cliffe, Lewes Kenward John aged 37 from Fletching, Brewers Labourer in 4 Cliffe Square, Cliffe, Lewes Kenward Thomas aged 40 from Beddingham, Chalkpit Laboure at Fir Tree Cottage, Cliffe Kenward William aged 43 of Isfield, Gardener in St Nicholas Lane, Lewes Kenward William aged 43 of Fletching, Blacksmith in White Hill, Lewes
I think the two in bold must be related
Chris
