Porter Street Westminster
« on: Monday 21 April 08 18:07 BST (UK) »

HI,

I have a couple who married at Strand Register Office and their address is given as Porter Street.

Can some kind person tell which census district that would be in the 1861 census please.

Many thanks

Hello, Sue,

The Street index for the 1861 Strand census district shows

Porter Street, Great Newport St.  Strand
Part is missing from the ED1 houses nos 1-7
part 7 -27 can be  found in

RG9/176  folios 1-8

Always unfortunate when part of a census is missing,  what house no Porter St do you want ?     You might be lucky & find it.

Hey, that's brilliant - Lewis is one of the ones I am looking for.  Hopefully, Ann
the other is Vimpany (could that be 'Imsting') either Catherine or George.

Thank you so much

Yes, Sue,

You've hit the jackpot again.

Ann Lewis  head  widow  age 50  Nurse  b  Oxfordshire
Thos.W.  son age 16  Engineer    g  Middsx Westminster
Andrew  son  age 9   b  ditto
Selina, grdau  age 5   b  ditto

It is not Vimpany but either Imsting or Emsting
E or C. I(E)msting  head  age 25   Carpenter b  Middsx London
Amelia   wife  age 24  b  Sussex  Richmond
Emma  dau age 6   b  St James Westminster

I looked at the 1861 name index for Vimpany but there was nothng for a Catharine or George, there were about 6 of that surname in Gloucestershire.

Hi Meliora,

Thank you so much for that.  It was Ann Lewis I was looking for - she was the mother of Catherine who married George Vimpany - on their marriage cert in 1860 they both gave Porter Street as their address.  After that I can't find them anywhere.

I have the ones in Gloucester thank you - this is just the illusive family that got away!

Many thanks again for your help.
