Samuel Job Upton
« on: Monday 21 April 08 19:51 BST (UK) »

Hi
I am looking for information on Samuel Job Upton of March in Cambridgeshire. I do not know where he was born only that he had, I think, 5 children (5 boys 1 girl) and was born around the 1880's.
Can anyone give me a starting point but bear in mind I'm new to this Smiley

There is a birth registration for a Job Samuel Upton in Cambridgeshire in 1883 and and an entry for a Job S Upton born 1884 March Cambridgeshire on the 1891 census

Parents James and Fanny

Could this be him?

Hi Tricia
Thanks for replying.
Yes it is possible that it is him as Job is a family name. One of his sons was named Donald Job. Is there anything else on him ?
Thanks very much

Possible marriage

ROWLINGS  Mabel Alice
UPTON  Job Samuel
Marriage registered qrt ending December 1905
N. Witchford

March registers in North Witchford

I'm afraid I can't go any further forward with this - I can only trace the census backwards from 1901

Hi Ricky & Tricia
Yes this is defiantly him as there was a Mable in the family. So my family is from st Ives at around 1860. I am amazed that you found this information so fast. I really appreciate it as I have tried before looking for Samuel. Now this explains my lack of success as he was using his middle name.

Hi Andy

Thanks for the Emails - it's easier to reply to this thread.

There is a marriage registration which looks like James

James Upton/Fanny Andrews
Marriage reigistered qrt ending June 1881
North Witchford
Vol 3b
Page 981

This fits in with the birth of his son James in 1882

Here is James Upton in 1881 with his parents

1881

Norwoodside, March, Cambridgeshire

Job Upton Head Widower 51 Railway District Signal Fitter(Contractor) born Tutbury Staffordshire
James son 21 Unmar Bricklayer born St Ives Hunts
Thomas E son 20 Unmar Blacksmith's striker born St Ives Hunts
Charles A  son 19 Unmar Engine Fitter's assistant
Annie E dau 18 Housekeeper born St Ives Hunts
Rosa E dau 13 General servant domestic born March Cambs
Fanny dau 8 born March Cambs

RG11/1690 Folio 62 Page 14

I'll sort out all those children and Fanny Andrews when I have done the direct line - to try and keep it in some sort of order Smiley

This looks like a good bet for Job's marriage as Burton lies on the boundaries of Staffordshire and Derbyshire - Ignore this

Job Upton/Elizabeth Grant
Marriage registered qrt ending September 1861
Burton
Vol 6b
Page 342

***This is interesting as the birth of son James is as follows

James Upton
Birth registered qrt ending September 1859
St Ives
Vol 3b
Page 259

Now, that marriage may be incorrect or James was born prior to their marriage. Looks as though he was Job's son, though, as he has the Upton surname.

Might be interesting to send for James' birth certificate and see what it reveals***

***Ignore all this and see next posting***

Right - I have been having a search around and became very confused as after I found that last marriage for Job I discovered that there were 2 Job Upton's born in Tutbury in Staffordshire within a couple of  years from each other.

I couldn't work out which was your Job until I found an entry on FamilySearch which explains everything.

Please ignore the marriage to Elizabeth Grant - this is the wrong marriage.

Remember Harriet Heath Upton who died?  Here is the connection and the correct marriage and father for Job

Extracted record from parish registers on FamilySearch so should be accurate

Job Upton married Elizabeth Heath
2nd October 1854 Saint Alkmund, Derby, Derbyshire
Husband 24
Wife 20

Job's father - James Upton

So young James born end of 1859 was legal Wink Wink

1851

Etwell, Derbyshire

John Upton Head 30 Blacksmith born Roustone Stafford
Ann wife 25 born Hitton Derbyshire
Mary dau 3 born Etwall
Joseph son 2 born Etwall
Elizabeth dau 9 months born Etwall
Thomas Ridge 15 Apprentice born Nottingham
Job Upton 22 Journeyman born Tutbury Staffs

HO107/ 2011 Folio 259

Doesn't give relationship to John but he doesn't show up as a brother to Job in 1841 so he may be a cousin or something

The other Job is with his parents in 1851(dad is Job so we know we have the correct one)

This is the birth entry for James Upton age 17 on the 1841 census. I was rather hoping it would give me his mother's surname but no such luck

I hope you are keeping up with all these Job's James' and Elizabeths Grin

James Upton
Born 1st July 1823
Christened 22nd July Hornington Street Wesleyan, Burton Upon Trent, Stafford, England
Parents James and Elizabeth

It only gives Job's christening date - 7th December 1828, Tutbury, Stafford
Parents James and Elizth

Charles - christening  15th May 1831   Tutbury, Stafford, England

Don't know who Jane is - may be a grandchild - may not even be Jane - writing was a bit smudged

Again, these are extracted records from parish registers
