Tessa

This looks like Annie's mum recently married in 1881:

William Bain 35, Merchant Draper & Grocer Emply. 1 Man, b. Olrig, Caithness
Annie Bain 39, b. G. Vogubeat (?spl), Inverness

Address: Isauld Cottage & Shop Attached, Reay, Caithness

They are still there up to 1901. There does not look to have been any children from the marriage.

William Bain and Anne Cant married 25 Dec 1879 in Kilmichael. As I mentioned earlier they are in my tree. I have Ann as the daughter of James Cant b 16 dec 1800 in Shogle he married Ann Duncan and they had 10 children. James was the son of James Cant b 13 july 1775 Tulloch Rafford and wife Mary Calder, Your James Cant b 1800 was the brother of my gt gt gt grandfather Alexander Cant b 2 Jan 1808. I have a very good Cant tree if you want any more info on them.

Hi Larkspur

Do you know if James and Ann (Duncan)'s son George b. 1834 went on to become a policeman? There is a possible entry for him showing in the 1871 Census in London.

Sorry cannot help with that one. I have seen the census and also the 1881 where he is with wife Jane and he is a Police Sergeant. George certainly is not with his widowed mother and siblings on the 1861.Ok just found in the Archives the retirement of George DUNCAN Cant. Go the The National Archives and put George Cant Police in their search and up it comes. The only George Cant that comes up on the Scottish census as born in Inverness is the Policeman living in Paddington on the 1881, I would say there is a strong chance this is the right boy. George Duncan died in 1888 and his death record states he was born 1825 so too old for ours.

That's great Larkspur  Smiley Just thinking of Tessa and her hunt for g grandmother's birth. In the 1901, Annie Cant (Gordon) showed as born in London so I wondered if mother Annie was perhaps sent down to England (perhaps London?) to have the baby if her brother was already there... He certainly would appear to be in London by at least the 1871 census, he shows as a police sergeant in Marylebone.

Hi, I've come across this debate rather late too, but just thought I'd mention, as an addition to the excellent information on  Gordon's Mill, that I have photographs of this building and would be happy to provide copies by email.
