Hi,
Can anyone help me to find the marriage of Mary ? to possibly Joseph Massey. Mary was born abt 1804 in Adswood Cheshire. She is on the 1861 census in Ardwick, widow, with 5 daughters and 1 son, Joseph Massey who was born 1837 Ardwick.
First child Elizabeth was born abt 1829 in Adswood and 2nd child Hannah born Edgely abt 1831. All other children born Ardwick, the last one in 1849, so husband must have died after that. I can't find this family in 1851 to help me with the father's name.
Many thanks,
regards,
Margaret

I think this may be your family in 1841:
HO107/578/14/20 Mayo St, Ardwick, Manchester Joseph MASEY - 27 - [...] Maker Mary MASEY - 37 Elizabeth MASEY - 13 Hannah MASEY - 11 Martha MASEY - 7 Joseph MASEY - 4 (All born in Lancashire.)
If the ages are correct (they're quite clear on the image), it looks as though Joseph was Mary's second husband, and the 2 oldest girls were probably born before their marriage.

Thank you Rambler for that info. So I am now looking for 2 marriages!!
Perhaps the marriage to Joseph was before the birth of Martha c 1836 in Ardwick.
Do you know which district Adswood might come under ie Stockport? I am not too familiar with Cheshire boundaries.
Kind regards,
Margaret

Adswood and Edgely are both close to central Stockport, so ought to come under that registration district - they don't seem to get a separate listing, but are closer to the centre than (eg) Handforth, which is in Stockport reg. district.

Thank you for that Rambler.
I found them on 1841 as you indicated but they don't seem to be appearing in 1851.
Can anyone help me with that census please.
Regards,
Margaret

I think it's likely they were in Manchester by 1851, and parts of the Manchester 1851 census were water-damaged, and are not available on Ancestry. However, some people have CDs of various districts, so I suggest you post a separate lookup request on the Lancashire board for the Manchester 1851 unfilmed returns and hope for the best!
