Flying the flag for Yellowbellies!
|
Hi,
I'm trying to track down an elusive relative who simply disappears off the radar in 1856 in Lincolnshire. As he doesn't appear in the 1861 census.
His name is John MUMBY and he was born at Barnetby-Le-Wold, Lincolnshire in 1820.
In November 1847 he married Jane BREWER in Hull and their first child, a son, was born in Barnetby the following year (I think he died young). They also had a daughter also born in Barnetby in 1850 who died aged 21.
On 23rd January 1856, John MUMBY was arrested for stealing a few vegetables from the Lord of the Manor at Barnetby and was tried on 11th April at Kirton in Lindsey Quarter Sessions, found guilty and sentenced to 4 calendar months.
This where the trial goes cold. In the 1861 Barnetby census, his wife is listed as 'married' and born about 1823 at Burnham, Lincolnshire, but his daughter, now aged 11, is living with her maternal grandparents, which suggests something is amiss. There's no sign of the son either.
In the 1871 Wrawby census, John's wife is still listed as 'married' and the daughter was living in a different town. Sadly in 1872 the daughter died, but in May 1880, Jane remarried at Worsbrough Dale, Yorkshire to a chap called William GOOD (he was born at Wrawby, Lincolnshire). On the marriage certificate it gives her condition as being 'widow' and that bride and groom were living at Worsbrough Dale.
I rather think she gave her status as being 'widow' because she hadn't seen or heard from John MUMBY for a number of years and presumed that he had died.
I can't find a suitable burial / death entry. Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I have Mumbys from Lincolnshire in my tree. My g.g.grandfather was born in 1818 in Boston, Lincolnshire and married in 1842 in Boston, but there is no trace of him on the 1851 census, although his wife Mary Ann and 3 daughters are living at St Marks Square, Hull.
There is no trace of the family on the 1861 census, but they are back again from 1871 onwards.
I wonder if there is some connection here. Do you know who John Mumby's father was?

Hi all,
Thanks for your input.
GeoffE - you're absolutely right. The John MUMBY born at Caenby isn't the guy I'm looking for.
Benzol - that's a very interesting theory. I hadn't thought of that before. I'll have to check this one out. I suppose it is possible if John was on the wrong side of the law again at some stage he could have been conscripted into the army.
Lizzie Not So Busy - the John MUMBY I'm looking for, his parents were John MUMBY and Sarah LEESON.
If anyone has got any other ideas please feel free to share!

Hi, I can't see a connection between George Mumby my g.g.grandfather and John Mumby, but I'll keep his name in mind if I ever get to Lincolnshire to look at the parish records. They might be distant relatives although I think Mumby was quite a common name in Lincolnshire.
