William SNIGG/SNEAGE/SNAGE
« on: Monday 21 April 08 22:31 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find out where my 4th gt grandfather William Snigg originated from, and wonder if anyone has any ideas.  Huh

The OPC for Madron has kindly supplied me with the marriage (from Madron parish records) of a William Snigg, widower, to Susannah Eddy, Widow on 10 April 1832.  I can trace Susannah back as marrying Matthew Eddy previous to this, however, I cannot find any information on William Snigg.

The only other information I have is: that both William and Susannah were listed as "of Madron, residing in Penzance"; William was a Confectioner; witnesses at the marriage were Jane Corin and F Read; William Snigg was buried in Madron in March 1838, and Susannah went on to marry for a third time in St Ives.  (The surname Snigg seemed to be spelt in varying ways down through the generations after William.)

Any help would be much appreciated  Smiley

Hi cornish maid,

I don't see William's burial listed at Madron in 1838. Do you have his age from the burial record? ............Kris  Cheesy

Hi Kris,

A William Snigg's death was recorded in the first quarter of 1839 in the Penzance District.  Apparently in the Madron Parish Records there is a burial of a William ??, of Penzance, aged 45, buried 24 March 1839.  This would seem to be William Snigg.

By the 1841 census Susannah is once more a Widow and is living in St Ives with daughter Mary Ann Snigg.  Susannah was baptised in St Ives as Susannah Hart on 29 December 1793, so it would make sense I suppose that she moved back there after the death of her second husband.

Hi Beccy,

This certainly is a toughy. I have been taking a general look about and note the names Snigg, Snegg, Sneage, Snage seem to be extremely rare anywhere in the British Isles (not just Cornwall) Nothing at all showing for a William. A William marries in 1786 in Bristol, but this is too old to be the previous marriage for your William. (Perhaps the parents  Undecided) I wonder where the name has originated from. The IGI only has your marriage and a suggested birth for William as 1805 and nothing else at all for the name in Cornwall. Young Mary was very young when he died so I am guessing you have little family knowledge of the man........Kris

Hi Kris

Yes, it certainly is a toughy, and you are right there seems to be no family knowledge of him at all  Undecided.  I have tried searching under his occupation but to no avail.  I cannot seem to find him at any time before his marriage to Susannah.

I was just wondering whether their daughter's name might be relevant  Huh.  There doesn't seem to be a Mary Ann on Susannah's side at all.

Not that that helps much at the moment seeing I can't find any Sniggs at all  Roll Eyes
