Alston Look Up Please
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 14:14 BST (UK) »

Hello there!

I am trying to find the marriage of my GG grandparents Thomas Bell and Mary Armstrong.

They were both single in 1841 and their first child was born in 1846.  I have checked civil registration and there is no registered marriage between two people of these names beteen 1841 and 1851.

I'm hoping that if someone has access to parish registers for those dates they may be able to find it for me.

The Bells were Anglican, while the Armstrongs seem to have converted to Methodism somtime in the mid 1830s judging by location of christenings, so it could be at St Augustine or at one of the Methodist chapels.

I know this is a long shot but if anyone can help I'd be grateful

Many thanks

Ashley

Is it possible that Mary had been married before and thus didn't marry as an ARMSTRONG?

Incidentally, the IGI has Alston CofE marriages 1701-1877 in Batch M000201

Hi Geoff

That is a good suggestion which I will explore.

I'm always a bit dubious about these later dates on some of the batch numbers - a lot of my family is in Bishopwearmouth in Durham and the batch claims to cover some quite late dates but after about 1837 it is very patchy.

I suspect that if the bride was Methodist it would be in one of those churches they married.  All of the children were baptised as methodists and so were the grandchildren.
