Jill,
I ordered a film of a SOM parish last Tuesday and when it arrives I'm going to order film number 425442 Horsley BT's 1580 - 1812. I'm particularly interested in the 17th to mid 18th C's at Horsley.
If you get no luck by say the end of May, contact me by P.M. and I'll try to find it for you.
Regards
Chas

Jill,
Oh my memory!!
I've just checked some paperwork including the 30 or so LDS pink receipts I have for films I've searched and found that I had the Horsley film of marriages some time ago.
I've eyeballed my records and found 1738's marriages include:- "Sept 28 John Horwood & Martha Smith" and that's all that was given. One must assume that they were both of Horsley because the next wedding is:- "Oct 14 John Nelmes of Frocester & Martha Fryer of this Parish."
As a matter of interest, my records for 1741 includes this marriage:- May 28 Richard Horwood & Hester Tekel I do not know if Hester is related to my Teakles and one has the name Ann - Ann Teakle; anybody for the auction?!!
I note that the parish seems very popular with "foreigners" from Stroud, Tetbury, W-U-E and places in WIL so perhaps the vicar did not ask too many questions!
Regards
Chas

Thanks Chas.
I agree that it looks as if they were both local - and possibly the Richard Horwood who married Hester was John's brother.
I've been looking for a John Horwood/Martha marriage just prior to 1740 for ages - seems like 'since Noah was a lad'! Mine had their first child in Wargrave, Berks in 1740 - quite some way from Horsley. However, name searches in Berks and neighbouring Bucks & Oxon haven't come up with the goods, so perhaps they did come from further afield.
Pushing my luck, you wouldn't happen to have the baptism records for Horsley, would you? I can't see any children to John & Martha after 1738 in Horsley on the IGI, but then the IGI is not always complete.
I'll also look to see if by any chance there are any Horwood wills in the area.
Thanks, Jill

Jill,
Sad to say, the IGI is "over complete" by quite a percentage because it contains many fairy tales in its submitted entries!! However, I agree that the IGI's extracted entries are not complete for three reasons.
1. Many entries extracted from church records have been deleted when "used" by LDS members in their submissions - but there's no way of finding out if submissions were once extracted!
2. The LDS may have missed a record during the extraction procedure - I've found some but not many in my searches.
3. The LDS has not extracted data. from all the films they have or they may not have filmed all. See http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/FindingBatchNos.html
Regarding the film of baptisms in Horsley; I am to search it looking for members of my family who may have been missed during the extraction process but I do not think I'll find any in view of my experiences with extracted entries. Remember that the LDS used the film I'll be checking but . . . .
Regards

Have a look in the site I gave in reason 3: you'll find that the LDS has filmed the Wargrave records but have not extracted data from it which is why the place is not to be found in http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm
Your only way now is to get yourself to an LDS church FHC, order a film - 1849308 or 1279475 or 1040709 or 1040710 - have a look in the LDS library catalogue for their details - buy some aspirins and get eyeballing !!
Or there's the Berks records office . . . . .
If you found any Wargrave stuff in the IGI beware of accepting it without checking source doc's on film.
