7 Feb 1820 Mary Magdalen married Richard Whiting at the parish church in Moulton, Northamptonshire. The couple had William, John, Anne, Thomas, Miriam and Lean by 1831. Sometime after that date they immigrated to South Africa. At least I have record of the father, Richard and two daughters Miriam and Leah residing in South Africa.
Family rumor has it that Richard was a missionary in South Africa. I wonder if the family converted to the Weslyan Methodist faith as both daughters married in Weslyan Methodist churches.
I'm trying to determine if Mary Magdalen died before the family immmigrated and if the family was indeed Weslyan Methodist.
Can anyone help? The Magdalen surname doesn't appear in Northamptonshire in census. I was wondering if she was a foundling and they named her Magdalen because it was a Biblical name?
Thanks four your help! Laverdiere

What evidence do you have for the bride's maiden name having been Magdalen? I see the IGI marriage and children's baptisms, but they are all submitted and therefore unreliable (unless you are the submitter and have done the research yourself ). I wonder whether she might have been Mary Magdalen [surname] as opposed to Magdalen being her surname.
I see this additional baptism which is IGI extracted - could it be of the same family?

Hi Laverdiere, There are some Magdalen surnames on the BMD registers - some from London and one set from Oxfordshire - but I can't access the details without paying the fee. You can look yourself and decide if you wish to do this on the following site: www.bmdregisters.co.uk Hope this helps a little. Kind regards, Paulene

Forgot to say these are nonconformist registers, so you might find them useful. Paulene

Foundlings particularly those left in the church porch were often named after the church. The interesting thing about the name "Mary Magdalen" is that while there are about half a dozen churches of that name in Northamptonshire the nearest one to Moulton is in Ecton which is some distance from Moulton.
